Post
By Ashley Brugnone, CMP Writer As part of its mission, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is dedicated to firearm safety, marksmanship training and to the promotion of marksmanship competition for citizens of the United States with an emphasis on youth. To fulfill that mission, the organization is constantly finding ways to evolve in order to amplify public awareness and to provide broadened opportunities to new and existing CMP supporters. Over the last year, CMP staff members have been thoroughly revamping a variety of elements that will benefit individuals already associated with the organization as well as those yet to discover its value in the marksmanship community. Changes for the coming year include updated CMP Rulebooks for Pistol, Rifle, Games, Smallbore and Long Range Matches. Also, the Small Arms Firing School (SAFS) remote clinics held around the country, formerly known as “Traveling SAFS,” will now be called “Rifle/Pistol Marksmanship 101” – with a new line of locations, set to be announced in 2020. Other improvements/changes coming soon include: CMP Website Improvements: CMP’s website, www.TheCMP.org, has undergone updates that include a new design and layout, improved navigation and search functions, user-friendly maps to easily locate CMP Affiliated Clubs and upcoming matches and clinics. Smallbore: The growing CMP Smallbore department will be offering match sanctioning for smallbore to include Outdoor 3P and Prone matches, along with Indoor 3P 50ft matches. With more opportunities to compete, two new Distinguished Badges have been implemented for 3P and Prone smallbore competitors. NEW North Store Location: The […]

By Andrew Hall From the Garand Collector’s Association Journal We are a little embarrassed to admit that the exploits of two shooters at the 2018 D-Day Matches at the CMP ‘s Talladega Marksmanship Park were not noticed until recently. In the Vintage Sniper Team Match, only three teams fired their Ml ‘s out of the 27 because most shooters prefer the “more accurate” bolt-action rifles. What is incredible is not only did the team of Doug Armstrong and Paul Hoecke win the semi-auto category, they had a higher score than those competitors firing mostly scoped M1903 variants. Doug and Paul bested the next closest team by 5 points with an enviable score of 390-12X. What? How is this possible? There’s no question that Doug and Paul are good shooters, but what about the rifle? In recognition of his USMC service, Doug set about building a clone of the Marine Corps’ product-improved version of the M1C, the Model 1952. The rifle started as an M1C purchased from the CMP, and Doug paid an extra $100 to get a matching base. He then had a standard weight Krieger barrel installed. After carefully assembling the rifle using many of the specs outlined in Jerry Kuhnhausen’s book, it was time to mount the scope. Since an original USMC Stith-Kollmorgen scope is not exactly bargain-priced, he scoured eBay until he found a well-preserved commercial variant. The original USGI mount and rings are also rare and costly, so he purchased reproductions. Because he could not get the […]

CMP Director Emeritus Awaits Internal and Public Vote – Open Until September 3 By Steve Cooper, CMP Training, Education & Marketing Manager CAMP PERRY, OHIO – Gary Anderson, Director of Civilian Marksmanship-Emeritus, who has been a household name at the Civilian Marksmanship Program, and in much of the U.S. precision rifle shooting community since the 1950s, has been named one of 15 finalists for induction into the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Fame Class of 2019. VOTE HERE: TeamUSA.org/Vote Open Until September 3 You May Vote More Than Once! Anderson, 79, served as the Director of the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) from 1999-2009. In addition to promoting firearms safety training and rifle practice for all shooters, his primary focus at CMP has been to develop and sustain successful youth marksmanship programs at both regional and national levels. Anderson, in addition to earning Olympic gold medals in the Tokyo and Mexico City Games in rifle shooting, and countless marksmanship awards around the world and across the U.S., is known for his unrelenting desire to promote the benefits and instruct the safety of the shooting sports. From a very young age, hunting and shooting fascinated him. He grew up on a farm in rural Axtell, Nebraska. Without benefit of a coach or proper equipment (including ammunition), Anderson taught himself how to shoot by dry-firing his rifle for hours at a time. Dreams of becoming an Olympic gold medalist in rifle marksmanship led him to the US Army. In 1959, after convincing skeptical US […]
