Guests Learn How To Become CMP Level II Range Officers During Alabama Course in June
Post
TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) recently hosted a Level II Range Officer (RO) Training Course at its Talladega Marksmanship Park facility in Alabama. The June 9 class was offered as part of the Talladega D-Day marksmanship event’s scheduled activities. “We had a good session at CMP Talladega for the RO classes during the D-Day matches,” said Steve Cooper, CMP training and education manager, who led the RO Level II rifle and pistol sessions offered at the event. Seven participants sat in on the D-Day Range Officer courses, with the rifle portion lasting around two hours and the pistol around an hour. Everyone in attendance received a flash drive with the entire RO slide show presentation, plus a ready-reference Range Officer handbook that provides answers to many issues related to safety, range etiquette, flow of the matches, scoring procedures, firearm handling and match interruptions (firearm failure, changing range conditions, etc.). Each participant also received their Level II bars that pin to their CMP range officer vests to symbolize their certification. “It was a good group. Lots of questions and discussion,” said Cooper. “The program really elevates safety issues at home ranges, gives us a pool of possible RO’s for the national and regional CMP matches and, of course, adds an important layer of safety.” The next Range Officer Level II trainings will be held in July during the annual National Matches at Camp Perry. Courses to be conducted include Bullseye Pistol (July 12), Smallbore/Rimfire Sporter Rifle (July 20) along […]

Christina, With you and the CMP in general taking a bunch of crap lately for the national matches and games matches requirements, let me change it up a bit….everyone will take 20 minutes to type up a scathing, whining email or facebook post, but I doubt many people, if anyone, has come out and said they appreciate you guys working hard to make SOME form of national matches happen. A lot of us do, even if we don’t take the time to say it. Good Lord, I’ve never seen a bunch of grown men whine as much as what I’ve seen on the forums and FB groups lately. Just know that the vast majority of us appreciate what you do and just want to shoot, regardless of the rules and regulations that you guys are having to put in place to make it happen. Hopefully all this hasn’t put too much of a damper on you guys. Keep up the good work, and again, THANK YOU! Ryan H

Those who have earned designated classification status within Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) competitions will soon have proof of their achievements, with specially designed carrying cards set for distribution. The cards will display the individual’s name, CMP Competition Number and all classification ranks (Marksman, Sharpshooter, Expert, Master and High Master), as well as the date each classification was reached and average score. Cards will also be available for download through CMP’s Competition Tracker site. To download, login to the Competition Tracker page (https://ct.thecmp.org) and go to “My Account”. Under the tab titled “Competitions and EIC Results”, you will see your classifications in the lower right side of the screen. In the near future, CMP Classification certificates for display purposes will be accessible as well in the same location. CMP Classifications are awarded for the following disciplines: Highpower Rifle Service Pistol .22 Rimfire Pistol Long Range Match Pistol Smallbore (Prone and 3P) The CMP maintains a national database of competitors and scores that are used to establish classifications. Classifications are used as a basis for award groupings during CMP competitions. Competitors earn classifications through score averages fired in qualifying competitions. As scores improve, so does a competitor’s classification standing. Learn more about each discipline’s classification rules by visiting the “Competition Rulebooks” page on the CMP website at https://thecmp.org/competitions/cmp-competitions-rulebooks/. Post
With the uncertainty of the condition of the COVID-19 pandemic in the coming months, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is looking ahead to the 2020-2021 three-position air rifle competition season. In an attempt to place a supplemental plan for allowing junior athletes to compete in air gun events in the coming months, the CMP has created an altered series of matches where participants fire completely from their home or local ranges. The CMP “virtual” matches will stand as substitutes for the JROTC Service, JROTC National and CMP Regional Three-Position Air Rifle Championships. Instead of traveling to a location in the north, south or west to compete on CMP’s Mobile Electronic Target Range as in the past, qualifying athletes would stay in their hometowns. The competition series of the annual JROTC and CMP Three-Position Championships traditionally begins with a postal match, where competitors fire at their home ranges on official CMP targets and mail them back for scoring once athletes have completed the match. The new “virtual championships” will be modeled after the postal matches, with some modifications to verify rules and safety measures are followed. As an added measure to ensure the well-being of all competing in CMP events, we emphasize respecting local guidance on COVID-19 while within the range. The JROTC and CMP Championship Postal events will begin in October 2020 and conclude in February 2021 – an expanded set of time compared to past Postal Matches. This extra time will allow schools and athletes time to address and […]

Post
By Serena Juchnowski, CMP Feature Writer Defining a goal and working towards it – Zevin Linse of Kent, Wash., has spent the last five years improving himself as a marksman, and he is not stopping any time soon. Zevin shoots on the Washington Warriors junior highpower service rifle team, but the 11th grader also shoots air rifle as part of his school’s Marine Corps JROTC marksmanship program, uses smallbore as winter cross-training and has embarked on an adventure into long range. In 2018, in an unusual set of circumstances, Zevin was appointed head coach of his JROTC air rifle program after the primary instructor left. Though another instructor has since come on board, Zevin’s up-to-date knowledge on rules and ability to pass what he has learned on to the newer shooters has proven extremely valuable. The Linse family is an outdoors one but did not have a competitive shooting background. Zevin recalls plinking with a .22 at his family’s cabin with his two sisters and parents as well as hunting with his dad. A family friend who happened to be a junior coach suggested Zevin try highpower around the same time his parents discovered the Cascade Shooting Facilities junior program. Curious about the opportunity, Zevin soon found himself more involved than he could have ever imagined. “I do a lot less hunting than I used to,” he said. “I did like hunting, but I think the thing I liked most about it was just shooting, I liked marksmanship. So once […]

Read MoreEight USA Athletes Earned International Distinguished Badges in 2019
Post
By Gary Anderson, DCME Eight American rifle and shotgun athletes earned prestigious U.S. Distinguished International Shooter Badges in 2019 with international championship performances that gave them the 30 or more International-Excellence-in-Competition (IEIC) credit points required to receive the Badge. 2019 honorees included a U. S. Army Sergeant and seven civilians. Five of the eight are women. The youngest is 18 years of age, the oldest is 31 and their average age is 23. Five are shotgun athletes, three are rifle competitors and one is a Paralympic athlete. Several are in contention for places on the USA’s 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Shooting Teams. The Distinguished Badge Program, which traces its history to the first gold Distinguished Marksman Badges issued by the U. S. Army in 1884, now offers competitors opportunities to earn eight different gold Distinguished Badges. Of the eight different badges, the one that is arguably the most difficult to earn is the U. S. Distinguished International Shooters Badge. This is because to earn this badge a rifle, pistol or shotgun athlete must first qualify for a U. S. National Team that represents the USA in International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) or World Shooting Para Sport (WSPS) Championships. ISSF Championships include the Olympic Games, World Shooting Championship, World Cups and Continental Championships. WSPS Championships for athletes with disabilities include the Paralympic Games and WSPS World Championships and World Cups. But making a U. S. National Team is only the first step. To earn the badge, a National Team member must then earn 30 IEIC credit points in ISSF or WSPS Championships. IEIC credit points […]

All events fired on Rodriguez Range. We will utilize CMP electronic targets, located on Petrarca range, to conduct finals for the events. Clinics will be offered by the Army Marksmanship Unit and CMP Staff. CMP has partnered with Shooters Technology to develop a mobile application that will greatly expedite the scoring process for smallbore matches. After firing is complete, range officers will go down range and take pictures of the targets using the app. The app will transmit the target images to Orion scoring system where a computer operator will score the targets. In theory, all scoring will be complete by the time competitors return from hanging their next target. The CMP National Smallbore Championships will be back at Camp Perry this summer! Hope to see you there. If you have any suggestions or comments, please contact CMP Program Coordinator, Brad Donoho at [email protected] Sponsorships While CMP policy prohibits endorsement of any company product or service, we would like to recognize the following companies that will award their own separate products to the top shooters of the […]
