CMP Prepares to Open Second Round of 1911 Pistol Orders in Early 2021
November 19, 2020
Civilian Marksmanship Program▸The First Shot▸CMP Prepares to Open Second Round of 1911 Pistol Orders in Early 2021The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) has announced it will begin accepting orders to purchase CMP 1911 Type Pistols at the beginning of the new year – accepting orders from January 4 to March 4, 2021.
In 2018, the National Defense Authorization Act granted the first transfer of 1911s to the CMP for sale and distribution. Arguably one of the most iconic handguns ever produced, the M1911 served as the standard issue handgun for the U.S. Armed Forces from 1911 to 1985. The single-action, semi-automatic pistol uses .45 ACP rounds and is comprised of a comfortable, basic design.
New orders for the CMP 1911s will not be accepted before January 4, 2021, or after March 4, 2021 – any packets received or postmarked outside of those dates will be shredded and discarded. Only one CMP 1911 order form per customer per envelope may be submitted. Those who have already purchased a CMP 1911 through the RGN system or the Auction site will not be eligible to purchase a second 1911 at this time.
PLEASE NOTE: If you have already been assigned a RGN # and have sent in a complete and correct 1911 packet, you do not have to send in another packet. You will be contacted by our 1911 staff when your RGN # is ready to be processed.
Since these firearms are in high demand, a Random Number Generator will be utilized to provide a list of names in sequential order. Customers will be contacted in the sequence provided by the Random Number Generator.
When contacted, CMP 1911 customers will select their grade of pistol (Service, Field or Rack). Customers with higher generated numbers may have fewer grades from which to choose. When the allotment of 1911s is exhausted, the remaining orders will be held in the existing sequence for all future allotments of 1911s. At present time, CMP is unsure of future receiving future allotments.
All 1911 requests must be made through the mail – no 1911s will be available in CMP stores, and no in-store or drop-off orders will be accepted.
Each pistol is inspected and test fired by the CMP before it is shipped. Prices for the 1911s are marked at fair market value, in accordance with CMP’s enabling legislation, at the following levels (shipping cost included):
- Service Grade, $1050: Pistol may exhibit minor pitting and wear on exterior surfaces and friction surfaces. Grips are complete with no cracks. Pistol is in issuable condition. Pistols may contain commercial parts.
- Field Grade, $950: Pistol may exhibit minor rust, pitting and wear on exterior surfaces and friction surfaces. Grips are complete with no cracks. Pistol is in issuable condition. Pistols may contain commercial parts.
- Rack Grade, $850: Pistol will exhibit rust, pitting and wear on exterior surfaces and friction surfaces. Grips may be incomplete and exhibit cracks. Pistols may require minor work to return to issuable condition but are functional. Pistols may contain commercial parts.
- Auction Grade (Sales will to be determined by auctioning the pistol.): The condition of the auction pistol will be described when posted for auction.
As part of the CMP’s enabling legislation to supply these firearms, all customers will be subject to and must be approved by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), conducted through the FBI, to assure eligibility to purchase prior to shipment to a required Federal Firearms License (FFL) dealer.
Order forms and additional information for the CMP 1911 Pistols are available on the CMP website at https://thecmp.org/sales-and-service/1911-information/.
For questions, call the CMP 1911 customer service number at 256-770-4744 or reach the department by email at cmp1911@thecmp.org.
— By Ashley Brugnone, CMP Staff Writer
At what point will the CMP say exactly how many 1911s were up for sale in round 2?
We will not provide that information to our customers. When the allotment of 1911s is exhausted, the remaining orders will be held in the existing sequence for all future allotments of 1911s. The CMP does not know what future allotments might be.
Thanks,
Christine
I appllied to the program for the Sept-Oct 2018 release and never received and did not received a RNG number. How can I find out if my application was accepted and did that registration period carry forward?
Andrew,
You can reach out to our CMP 1911 customer service staff at cmp1911@thecmp.org.
Thanks,
Christine
Do the RNG numbers start at 1 and continue to the end of approved packets for round 2? Or, do they continue on from the last RNG number from Round 1? Any info is greatly appreciated, Thank You
Round 2 started at 20,000.
Christine
Has all of round one orders been processed?
I believe so – you can confirm with our 1911 staff at cmp1911@thecmp.org.
Thanks,
Christine
How many 1911’s are available for this go around?
We do not provide this information to the public. When the allotment of 1911s is exhausted, the remaining orders will be held in the existing sequence for all future allotments of 1911s. The CMP does not know what future allotments might be.
Thank you,
Christine
Do you know what RNG number the cmp is on now?
We don’t provide that information but you can follow a few of our customer posts at http://forums.thecmp.org/forumdisplay.php?f=110.
Thanks,
Christine

I already got a call from processing place and payed for pistol and sent them FFL info when can I expect shipment or Notificationfrom them that it has been shipped ?????
Our 1911 staff is busy inputting customer names so will can process computerized Random Number Generator which will provide a list of names in sequential order through the random picking process. Customers will be notified of their RGN number by email. Customers will be contacted in the sequence provided by the Random Number Generator. We hope to start sending out RGN numbers in 6-8 weeks. If you have not heard from us by June, please send us an email.
Perhaps his comment was from the 1st round of 1911 orders.
Thanks,
Christine
I have my RHN#. Mine is over 31K. Do you know if CMP will receive at least that many pistols?
For Round 2, we started at 20,000. We are not sure on the inventory of pistols we will receive but will continue to process all the orders from Round 2 before receiving additional orders.
Thanks,
Christine
Hi. I got my random number today. It’s pretty high: >26,000. What happens if the number of available is less than that? Will the rest of us get put into a round three?
We will continue to process all the orders from Round 2 and won’t open up Round 3 (if that’s a possibility) until all Round 2 orders are filled.
Thanks,
Christine
I sent my packet in in January, when will I hear if the packet was correct and a number assigned
Once we have received all order packets, customer names will be fed into a computerized Random Number Generator which will provide a list of names in sequential order through the random picking process. Customers will be notified of their RGN number by email. Customers will be contacted in the sequence provided by the Random Number Generator.
We hope to start sending out RGN numbers in 6-8 weeks. If you have not heard from us by June, please send us an email.
Thank you,
Christine
How many 1911 do CMP have for sale this round?
I’m not sure on this – you may reach out to our 1911 Manager if you’d like through the email cmp1911@thecmp.org.
Thanks,
Christine
I already got a call from processing place and payed for pistol and sent them FFL info when can I expect shipment or Notificationfrom them that it has been shipped ?????
Sir,
I’ll forward your name and email to our 1911 staff and they will reach out to you soon.
Thanks,
Christine
Are people getting calls, does this mean if I didn’t get a call or email, does this mean my packet was rejected.
Our 1911 staff members are still in the process of receiving packets and assigning numbers. An email will go out once we have completed the this process in a few weeks and you will receive your RGNs.
Thanks,
Christine
I submitted a packet for Round Two. How will I know what my RGN number is? Do you know ahead of time, or do you just have to wait for the contact call?
We will work on assigning the RGNs and then send an email out. This process may take a few weeks.
Thanks,
Christine
When do you anticipate finishing the first round and starting on the second.
Kevin,
I will forward your question to our 1911 Manager.
Thanks,
Christine
I believe that the 1st round was completed in 2019. The 2nd round closes today.
Sir,
For all intents and purpose the 1st round is completed and we are accepting order packets for the 2nd round until 3/4/21.
Mike Long
Does the GSSF qualify one for meeting the “club” requirement or would another be recommended such as IDPA?
Yes, GSSF is an affiliated CMP Club.
Thanks,
Christine
I just would like to clarify since it seems a bit ambiguous for club affiliation. But if I have a DD214 to prove prior military service but did not retire from the military does that meet the requirement? Thanks.
I don’t think that your DD-214 counts as a club requirement. But it does count towards the gun course/training. A membership with DAV, VFW ETC. Can count as an affiliated group. They are listed on the CMO website.
I can no longer access the 1911 order form that allows me to fill in information on my laptop instead of hand writing it in. I’ve looked every where I know of. Is the form no longer available as fillable fields online? I’ve tried everything I know of to no avail. I initially filled out the form online but needed to change a phone number. Now I can’t find it. Do I just need to print it and hand insert the fields. Thank you very much for any help.
Please make sure you are using the “Round 2” 1911 order packet – https://thecmp.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/2020CMP1911orderform.pdf?vers=011121. I believe we have it posted as a regular pdf. If you have the full version of Adobe, then you would be able to fill in the fields. You can print it and fill out by hand, this is what many of our customers do.
Thank you,
Christine
I am a member of the Phoenix Rod & Gun Club here in Phoenix, AZ.
Does that meet the requirement for being a member of a CMP affiliated club or organization?
Yes, you would need to provide a copy of your membership card or receipt of paying your membership fee.
Thank you,
Christine
Do I submit proof of my membership to an affiliated club or organization membership with the application?
Yes, please send all the eligibility requirements with your 1911 pistol order packet.
Thanks,
Christine
Who are the different manufacturer’s of the pistols being offered.
I was in the first run of packets and finally got my pistol yesterday. A beautiful unrefinished Colt/Remington Rand. So exciting. Send in a packet… you won’t be dissapointed
First-come, first-served basis or later submissions still have a chance to get one?
The Random Number Generator will provide a list of names in sequential order through the random picking process. Customers will be contacted in the sequence provided by the Random Number Generator. So whether you send in your packet in early January or late March, you will be assigned a Random Number.
Christine
I am retired, 100%, disabled soldier, I hold a concealed carry license and Armed Security License. Do these meet all the requirements for age, club membership, weapons qualifications
Colonel David Berry
Yes, you would meet the requirements (Please Note: At this time, we still cannot ship to the state of Massachusetts.)
You can download the order form at https://thecmp.org/sales-and-service/1911-information/.
Thank you,
Christine
For proof of citizenship can an expired passport work or do I need to have it renewed first?
An up to date passport will not raise eyebrows.
Excellent customer service, Christine Elder! Thank you.
Will there be a time for those who have previously purchased a 1911 to be able to buy another one in the RNG system? Or is it you only get one opportunity to own only one? I would love to have a chance to own another one. These are wonderful pieces of history.
I got one a 1911 in round one. Pretty excited about the piece of history I ended up with. Had a great afternoon showing it to my grandfather who served at the very end of WWII before he passed.
Helping someone else fill out the paperwork for this round. That person is only interested in one grade. If they choose one grade, will they get that option or will they just be able to choose from what’s available when their number comes up? Seems like when I got my call, I was given the option to choose from only the available options or pass up my chance. Is that the case this time?
Ben, When their number gets pulled, our 1911 staff will call to inform the customer of the available options available at that time. If they choose to pass, then we will move onto the next customer.
Thanks,
Christine
At the bottom of Page 2A of the packet there is a box for a notary public to certify the signature, but the instructions do not mention this. Is a notary certification required?
Yes, the following has been added to the 1911 order form:
This Form MUST be notarized in order to be accepted and to purchase a CMP 1911.
Thanks,
Christine
The CMP is accepting orders for 1911 pistols from January 4 to March 4, 2021. Does an order accepted in January have an advantage over a March submission or are they all treated the same?
After March 4, we will assign random numbers to the envelopes and start processing the orders. No advantage from mailing in January – numbers will be assigned randomly.
Thanks,
Christine
Would love to apply for a 1911 but my gun club isn’t CMP affiliated. Do adults registered under the Boy Scouts with a BSA id# count as an affiliation? I am also an Air Force vet.
The CMP also has several special affiliates, which include U.S. Military services. A copy of your DD-214 would fulfill the club membership requirement.
Christine
So if I read the requirements correctly, the only thing a veteran would have to supply with the package is a copy of his/her DD-214? It has all the requested info as far as I can tell.
I think all of you at the CMP are awesome folks. Thank you for keeping things going for the rest of us.
Does the FFL section of the packet need to be completed when sent or is that information collected at time of drawing/ notification?
You can just need to put the name & address of the FFL the are going to use.
Mike L
Christine,
Mailed off my packet today but it said to not supply the ffl info with the packet so I left it blank. Will that disqualify me?
You should be all set. Here’s what is posted on our website:
At the time a customer is contacted they will be asked to submit a current FFL where their pistol will be sent. All 1911’s will be shipped to a 01, 02 or 07 Federal Firearms License. Customers will have 5 business days from when contacted to provide CMP 1911 with a signed FFL.
Thanks,
Christine
I mailed my packet off today but missunderstood about the FFL portion of the paperwork and did not include it on the paperwork as I understood this would be given when selected. My question is can I submit another set of paperwork without it being considered a second set. I understand the first packet will not be accepted because it was not complete. I also included the grade and price information on page 3A. Now because of these errors am I not going to be able to receive a firearm.
Thank You
Lewis Thatcher Hilton
Can people from Massachusetts purchase a 1911 yet are, last I heard we are still off the list? Are you working with the Attorney General up here? I am retired Military and would like to buy one at the auction site, if possible?
Can we get an update?
Are we allowed to put in a package for the future time when we can purchase?
Thanks
JN
I am sorry to say that as far as we know the residents of Massachusetts still can not purchase a 1911. We have talked to several State Representatives and all they will say is “we will get back to you”. One was Rep. McKinny (?)
Once we hear anything we will post it on our website.
How many are available for this go around? Was every one from the last time fulfilled already?
We are still processing the last orders from the first round.
Christine
Do we need to fill out the item/item quantity price etc. on page 3A or do we leave this section blank since we will not know what is available.
You can leave the ordering/payment information blank on form 3A. Please complete the 1A, 2A and the top of 3A of the order form.
Thanks,
Christine
Do C&R FFL’s count for the FFL requirement?
No it must be an 01, 02 or 07 FFL. You may use your 03 FFL as proof of marksmanship.
Are all service grades pistols refinished?
Are all rack grades with original finish?
1. Hard question to answer, some are and some appear not to be or is it is, it was a long time ago.
2. Same as above. Rack grades are more likely to have been refinished long ago.
I ordered a service grade. It was not refinished or re-built by an Arsenal. It is a mixmaster.
How much did the Goverment pay for these “NEW” way back when ?
From what we understand depending on the manufacture somewhere between $14.00 – $25.00 each.
Does this mean we’re getting close to the end of the 1st set of RGN’s, because I haven’t heard anything back on mine yet? I know the number (in the 18000s), but I haven’t heard anything else.
PLEASE NOTE: If you have already been assigned a RGN # and have sent in a complete and correct 1911 packet, you do not have to send in another packet. You will be contacted by our 1911 staff when your RGN # is ready to be processed. You may reach out to our CMP 1911 Customer Service at cmp1911@thecmp.org.
Thanks,
Christine
My number on the first batch is 18,467 any idea when that number might be coming up?
PLEASE NOTE: If you have already been assigned a RGN # and have sent in a complete and correct 1911 packet, you do not have to send in another packet. You will be contacted by our 1911 staff when your RGN # is ready to be processed. You may reach out to our CMP 1911 Customer Service at cmp1911@thecmp.org.
Thanks,
Christine
I was called last week – my number was high 17,000s – they will be calling you soon – an Alabama number!
I am still unclear as to whether I am eligible to obtain a second 1911. I have received one already but unsure if I can get another. my RGN was in the 14,000. Am I disqualified or do I need to reapply or do I just rely on the info I already sent in and will I get another RGN or do I use the one I had.
From our website: If you have already purchased a 1911 whether from the previous Random Number Generator system or the Auction site, YOU ARE NOT ELIGIBLE TO PURCHASE ANOTHER 1911 at this time.
Christine
Hello CMP,
Quick question, request for Social Security number is still optional when filling out the order package for the purchase of the 1911/a1 correct?
No, we have to list it when we do the NICs background. We took “optional” off the forms. We have found that if you leave it off, 7 out of 10 times the person goes on “Delay” or Denied”.
Mike Long, 1911 Manager
My wife is a member of the Legion Auxiliary, is that considered a CMP affiliated organization?
Yes, we will accept it, it falls under The American Legion.
Mike Conrad, CMP Club Affiliations
Are all the 1911’2 WW2 issued?
The 1911’s were first issued before 1924 give or take a year, then most were modified to the 1911a1 variant. So both 1911s and 1911a1s were issued in WWII. Also remember that all did not see combat. — From our 1911 Manager, Mike Long
What would entail a complete package for the 1911 pistol. I have already purchased an M1 Garand rifle and my FFL information is on file.
Thank You
Gary L Mason
Our 1911 department is an entirely different sales operation. You will need to include ALL documentation (proof of age, citizenship, marksmanship, club membership) in your packet. Once our staff starts to process your order, then you will need to provide payment and your FFL information. We cannot transfer documents from our rifle sales to the 1911 sales.
Thank you,
Christine
If we order a service grade and those are not available when our number comes up, will we be deferred to the next lower grade? Or can we request the highest grade available when our number comes up?
Our staff will let you know the options when your order is processed.
Christine
I would like to know what I need to do to be eligible to apply and possibly buy one of the 1911s? I have been wanting to schedule a trip to the cmp to apply for membership or fill out any necessary paperwork to purchase firearms now or in the future? Thank you for any info.
You can download the 1911 packet with detailed instructions at https://thecmp.org/sales-and-service/1911-information/.
Thanks,
Christine
Hello,
My name is sean sexton. I am a 100% totally and permanently disabled veteran. I’m in Maryland waiting to receive my amputation. I’m from Boise Idaho. How would it work if I wanted to purchase a 1911?
Information for our ordering packet and instructions are posted on our website at https://thecmp.org/sales-and-service/1911-information/. Orders must be postmarked NOT PRIOR TO January 4, 2021 and NOT AFTER March 4, 2021.
Christine
I do want the Service Grade 911. I’m hopeful to be on the list to receive this fine handgun. Thank You for the information and opportunity. I’m a former buyer…The m1 Garand…Ammo ect..This opportunity for the 911 is better than expected…Thank’s .
Interested in field grade weapon
I HAVE WORSHIPPED THE GENIUS OF JOHN BROWNING SINCE MY ARMED SERVICE IN THE EARLY 1970s. AND I AM TRULY INTERESTED IN OWNING AND USING A VETERAN DEVICE THAT I AM VERY FAMILIAR WITH. PLEASE PUT MY NAME AT THE TOP OF THE LIST AS AN ELIGIBLE RECIPIENT OF THIS U.S. HISTORY!
There is no “list”. To be eligible to purchase one, you must submit an order packet, which can me found on our website.
Great news!!!!!
I had a RNG from the last time 1911 pistols were made available, but I can’t remember the number or the location of any of those documents I might still have. Do I need to know that number, or do you have it on file? It sounds like all I need to do is just wait to be notified that my number has been pulled.
The firearms dealer (FFL) that requested when I got my RNG has gone out of business so I would need to select another FFL, do you have provision for that possibility?
Feel free to reach out to our CMP 1911 Customer Service at cmp1911@thecmp.org.
Christine
I was not able to purchase the pistol when my CMP number 6119 was drawn. I am now able to afford the completion of my request. Will my paperwork be in the group previously submitted even though I responded that I did not want the pistol, do I need to fill out another batch?
Yes, you will need to submit a new 2nd Round Packet.
Thanks,
Christine
I sent a packet in Jan 2021, and I have not heard anything, I was hoping to hear if my packet was correct and would be given a number
Our 1911 staff members are still in the process of receiving packets and assigning numbers. An email will go out once we have completed the this process in a few weeks and you will receive your RGNs.
Thanks,
Christine
Are these Colt pistols?
They are all of the manufactures.
Thanks,
Christine
Are Massachusetts residents still barred from entering the lottery.
Per our website: At of the time of this release, only the state of Massachusetts will not allow the sale of the 1911/1911A1 pistol. We will not sell or ship to Massachusetts.
Unfortunately, we cannot accept orders from Massachusetts residents at this time.
Christine
I appreciate this update. I am interested in the service grade model 1911 and will apply as soon as the application date is here.
I did carry a 45 in Nam . please up grade to service grade
If you want to update your order, you will have to contact CMP 1911 Customer Service at cmp1911@thecmp.org.
Thanks,
Christine
I sent a packet in years ago. Am I still on the list? Dont know that I ever got the a number.
Ron,
If your packet was complete, then it would’ve been assigned a random generated number. Feel free to reach out to our CMP 1911 Customer Service at cmp1911@thecmp.org.
Thanks,
Christine
I have been assigned an RGN. When the calls start to go out for this second round what rgn will be the starting point for the calls. Does it begin with random number 1? I got an rgn in the 23000. Does that mean I have at least 23000 people ahead of me?
The numbers for round 2 started at 20,000, so approximately 3,000 customers in front of you.
Thanks,
Christine
