CMP Prepares to Open Second Round of 1911 Pistol Orders in Early 2021

November 19, 2020

Civilian Marksmanship Program▸The First Shot▸CMP Prepares to Open Second Round of 1911 Pistol Orders in Early 2021

The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) has announced it will begin accepting orders to purchase CMP 1911 Type Pistols at the beginning of the new year – accepting orders from January 4 to March 4, 2021.

In 2018, the National Defense Authorization Act granted the first transfer of 1911s to the CMP for sale and distribution. Arguably one of the most iconic handguns ever produced, the M1911 served as the standard issue handgun for the U.S. Armed Forces from 1911 to 1985. The single-action, semi-automatic pistol uses .45 ACP rounds and is comprised of a comfortable, basic design.

New orders for the CMP 1911s will not be accepted before January 4, 2021, or after March 4, 2021 – any packets received or postmarked outside of those dates will be shredded and discarded. Only one CMP 1911 order form per customer per envelope may be submitted. Those who have already purchased a CMP 1911 through the RGN system or the Auction site will not be eligible to purchase a second 1911 at this time.

PLEASE NOTE: If you have already been assigned a RGN # and have sent in a complete and correct 1911 packet, you do not have to send in another packet. You will be contacted by our 1911 staff when your RGN # is ready to be processed.

Since these firearms are in high demand, a Random Number Generator will be utilized to provide a list of names in sequential order. Customers will be contacted in the sequence provided by the Random Number Generator.

When contacted, CMP 1911 customers will select their grade of pistol (Service, Field or Rack). Customers with higher generated numbers may have fewer grades from which to choose. When the allotment of 1911s is exhausted, the remaining orders will be held in the existing sequence for all future allotments of 1911s. At present time, CMP is unsure of future receiving future allotments.

All 1911 requests must be made through the mail – no 1911s will be available in CMP stores, and no in-store or drop-off orders will be accepted.

Each pistol is inspected and test fired by the CMP before it is shipped. Prices for the 1911s are marked at fair market value, in accordance with CMP’s enabling legislation, at the following levels (shipping cost included):

  • Service Grade, $1050: Pistol may exhibit minor pitting and wear on exterior surfaces and friction surfaces. Grips are complete with no cracks. Pistol is in issuable condition. Pistols may contain commercial parts.
  • Field Grade, $950: Pistol may exhibit minor rust, pitting and wear on exterior surfaces and friction surfaces. Grips are complete with no cracks. Pistol is in issuable condition. Pistols may contain commercial parts.
  • Rack Grade, $850: Pistol will exhibit rust, pitting and wear on exterior surfaces and friction surfaces. Grips may be incomplete and exhibit cracks. Pistols may require minor work to return to issuable condition but are functional. Pistols may contain commercial parts.
  • Auction Grade (Sales will to be determined by auctioning the pistol.): The condition of the auction pistol will be described when posted for auction.

As part of the CMP’s enabling legislation to supply these firearms, all customers will be subject to and must be approved by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), conducted through the FBI, to assure eligibility to purchase prior to shipment to a required Federal Firearms License (FFL) dealer.

Order forms and additional information for the CMP 1911 Pistols are available on the CMP website at https://thecmp.org/sales-and-service/1911-information/.

For questions, call the CMP 1911 customer service number at 256-770-4744 or reach the department by email at [email protected].

At what point will the CMP say exactly how many 1911s were up for sale in round 2?

We will not provide that information to our customers. When the allotment of 1911s is exhausted, the remaining orders will be held in the existing sequence for all future allotments of 1911s. The CMP does not know what future allotments might be.

I appllied to the program for the Sept-Oct 2018 release and never received and did not received a RNG number. How can I find out if my application was accepted and did that registration period carry forward?

Do the RNG numbers start at 1 and continue to the end of approved packets for round 2? Or, do they continue on from the last RNG number from Round 1? Any info is greatly appreciated, Thank You

Our 1911 staff is busy inputting customer names so will can process computerized Random Number Generator which will provide a list of names in sequential order through the random picking process. Customers will be notified of their RGN number by email. Customers will be contacted in the sequence provided by the Random Number Generator. We hope to start sending out RGN numbers in 6-8 weeks. If you have not heard from us by June, please send us an email.

Perhaps his comment was from the 1st round of 1911 orders.

I just would like to clarify since it seems a bit ambiguous for club affiliation. But if I have a DD214 to prove prior military service but did not retire from the military does that meet the requirement? Thanks.

I don’t think that your DD-214 counts as a club requirement. But it does count towards the gun course/training. A membership with DAV, VFW ETC. Can count as an affiliated group. They are listed on the CMO website.

I can no longer access the 1911 order form that allows me to fill in information on my laptop instead of hand writing it in. I’ve looked every where I know of. Is the form no longer available as fillable fields online? I’ve tried everything I know of to no avail. I initially filled out the form online but needed to change a phone number. Now I can’t find it. Do I just need to print it and hand insert the fields. Thank you very much for any help.

Please make sure you are using the “Round 2” 1911 order packet – https://thecmp.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/2020CMP1911orderform.pdf?vers=011121. I believe we have it posted as a regular pdf. If you have the full version of Adobe, then you would be able to fill in the fields. You can print it and fill out by hand, this is what many of our customers do.
      Thank you,

Will there be a time for those who have previously purchased a 1911 to be able to buy another one in the RNG system? Or is it you only get one opportunity to own only one? I would love to have a chance to own another one. These are wonderful pieces of history.

I got one a 1911 in round one. Pretty excited about the piece of history I ended up with. Had a great afternoon showing it to my grandfather who served at the very end of WWII before he passed.

Helping someone else fill out the paperwork for this round. That person is only interested in one grade. If they choose one grade, will they get that option or will they just be able to choose from what’s available when their number comes up? Seems like when I got my call, I was given the option to choose from only the available options or pass up my chance. Is that the case this time?

Ben, When their number gets pulled, our 1911 staff will call to inform the customer of the available options available at that time. If they choose to pass, then we will move onto the next customer.

The CMP is accepting orders for 1911 pistols from January 4 to March 4, 2021. Does an order accepted in January have an advantage over a March submission or are they all treated the same?

After March 4, we will assign random numbers to the envelopes and start processing the orders. No advantage from mailing in January – numbers will be assigned randomly.

At the time a customer is contacted they will be asked to submit a current FFL where their pistol will be sent. All 1911’s will be shipped to a 01, 02 or 07 Federal Firearms License. Customers will have 5 business days from when contacted to provide CMP 1911 with a signed FFL.

My question is can I submit another set of paperwork without it being considered a second set. I understand the first packet will not be accepted because it was not complete. I also included the grade and price information on page 3A. Now because of these errors am I not going to be able to receive a firearm.

The 1911’s were first issued before 1924 give or take a year, then most were modified to the 1911a1 variant. So both 1911s and 1911a1s were issued in WWII. Also remember that all did not see combat. — From our 1911 Manager, Mike Long

Once our staff starts to process your order, then you will need to provide payment and your FFL information. We cannot transfer documents from our rifle sales to the 1911 sales.

Do I need to know that number, or do you have it on file? It sounds like all I need to do is just wait to be notified that my number has been pulled.

The firearms dealer (FFL) that requested when I got my RNG has gone out of business so I would need to select another FFL, do you have provision for that possibility?
