Williams, Others Reach New Records at CMP’s 2021 New England Games

October 6, 2021

Civilian Marksmanship Program▸State Director▸Vermont▸Williams, Others Reach New Records at CMP’s 2021 New England Games

JERICHO, Vt. – Returning to the picturesque scenery of the Green Mountains of Vermont after a lost year was the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) New England HP & Games Matches, held Sept. 19-26, 2021, at the Camp Ethan Allen National Guard Training Site. The annual event saw over 560 entries and several new match records on the ranges.

One of the things that makes the New England Games standout is its scenic views from the firing line.

The New England Games features CMP’s own exciting lineup of vintage and modern military rifle and pistol competitions. Designed for everyone to enjoy, the leisurely events are suitable for those just beginning in the sport of marksmanship while offering fun and hardy challenges for more experienced individuals.

In the CMP’s popular Garand Match, Brian Williams, 47, of Granby, Massachusetts, fired a New England Games record score of 294-8X – four points over the original record he had set in 2019. He also led the Vintage Military (288-9X) and Modern Military (294-8X) matches during the week.

Brian Williams reached multiple records at the 2021 New England Games – many he had previously held.

For his performances, Williams claimed the Three-Gun Aggregate with an overall score of 858-21X and the Four-Gun Aggregate with a score of 1,152-29X.

Also beating her own New England Games record in the Garand Match was Kerri Lewis, 46, of Middletown, Rhode Island, who fired a 287-5X in the High Woman category. Lewis went on to earn the overall win in the Springfield Match with a score of 289-7X – just one point away from the current New England Games record.

Kerri Lewis (center) also set her own records and obtained notable performances in Vermont.

Brian Williams returned to claim the Carbine rifle competition with a score of 370-5X (a match in which he, of course, holds the current New England Games record). SMSgt Bruce Rounds, 60, of Sherburne, New York, nabbed the High Senior title (357-4X), while Maisey Loucks, 27, of Mechanicville, New York, claimed High Woman (354-3X) in the match.

One of the latest events to make up the New England Games schedule is the educational Pistol Marksmanship 101 Course. Like the Small Arms Firing School held at the Camp Perry National Matches each year, the Marksmanship 101 Courses offer participants hands-on learning in firearm fundamentals in both rifle and pistol. The courses end with a true Excellence-In-Competition (EIC) Match on the range.

Leading the M9 EIC Match during the Pistol Marksmanship 101 Course was MSgt Mark Lindsley, 75, of Henniker, New Hampshire, with a score of 245-2X. On the rifle side, Stephen Bukowsky, 34, of Clinton, Connecticut, led the M16 EIC Match with a score of 378-8X.

A favorite amongst both adults and juniors at CMP events, the Rimfire Sporter Rifle Match offers classic .22 rifle competition in three different distinctions: O-Class (optics), T-Class (telescopic) and TU-Class (tactical-unlimited). SFC John Hawes, 37, of Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, claimed the overall T-Class win with a score of 593-32X as Daniel McAllister, 56, of Cambridge, Vermont, led the TU-Class with 560-11X. Brian Williams also managed to best his previous New England Games record score in the O-Class by three points, obtaining a 586-17X.

Maisey Loucks set records and claimed High Woman titles throughout the New England Games.

Earning the High Senior title in the T-Class was Bernard Jendruczak, 69, of North East, Pennsylvania, who finished sixth overall with a score of 573-18X. Maisey Loucks landed in second overall and shattered the High Woman New England Games record with her score of 589-33X. Loucks held the previous record of 575-20X, which she had set back in 2019.

Outside of the recreational Games Matches, the CMP hosted a series of Highpower matches that included a team event, three days of 800 Aggregate shooting and a culminating 2400 Aggregate. Individuals were recognized for their Service or Match Rifle use, scores at each position and Civilian or Military status.

Winning the CMP 2400 Cup overall Service Rifle title was SSG Amanda Elsenboss, 32, of Harleysville, Pennsylvania. During her New England Games performance, she led the Highpower events each day and at each position in the Military category.

Along with rifle events, the New England Games offers a variety of pistol competitive and learning opportunities.

Kerri Lewis led the Standing Slow Aggregate, Prone Rapid Aggregate and Day 1 of the 800 Aggregate in the Civilian Service Rifle category of the CMP Highpower Events – making way to the overall High Woman title in the CMP 2400 Aggregate. JB Stern, 57, of Agawam, Massachusetts, led the Civilian Sitting Rapid Aggregate.

Maureen Trickett, 62, of Woburn, Massachusetts, earned the High Senior title in the 2400 Cup, as Brian Williams fired the high overall score in the Match Rifle portion.

The New England Games rifle events are fired on CMP’s own line of outdoor electronic targets.

For those of us who do not know anything about the various events what would be the best source for this information. For example, if I would like to shoot in the rifle event – Garland. How many shoots are fired and from what positions? Are there any restrictions on the garand- like are match barrels okay? Can the stock be modified? Appreciate your help, Paul

      Paul,
Our Garand Match rules for the match and rifles are in our Games Rulebook at https://thecmp.org/competitions/cmp-competitions-rulebooks/ or you may reach out to our Competitions Department at [email protected] and they will be able to answer all your questions.
