New Events and Competitors Pack CMP’s 2021 Camp Perry National Pistol Matches

July 28, 2021

Civilian Marksmanship Program▸The First Shot▸New Events and Competitors Pack CMP’s 2021 Camp Perry National Pistol Matches

CAMP PERRY, Ohio – Featuring competitions never before held on the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) event schedule, the annual 2021 National Pistol Matches welcomed nearly 900 individuals on the firing lines – some for the first time.

Such newcomers included 1st Sgt. Mario Gonzales from Camp Parks in Dublin, California. Gonzales is a member of the 1-363rd Training Support Battalion and is also a Deputy Sherriff for the City and County of San Francisco. His marksmanship experience includes 20 years with the Army and competing at a local rod and gun club.

After missing 2020, the National Pistol Matches returned to Camp Perry with nearly 900 participants.

Gonzales admitted he had heard of Camp Perry in the past but was unable to make the trip until this year, arriving not only to compete but also to take the lessons he’s learned back with him to embed into his company’s training.

“I’m super addicted and I’m looking forward to bringing the rest of my company out here to enjoy it again – hopefully,” he said with a smile. “It’s a great place. Ohio has some of the most humble people I’ve ever met, and I’m looking forward to coming back again.”

1st Sgt. Mario Gonzales made his National Matches debut in 2021 and already eager to come back.

Fired July 12 through July 18 on the grounds of the historic Camp Perry National Guard Training Facility in Ohio, new events on the National Pistol Matches schedule included the Pop-Up Pistol match on the pop-up range located behind the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center. During the match, participants fired upon red and blue targets that electronically pushed upwards and fell backwards. Competitors aimed at each target as they rapidly appeared, earning points for each hit.

“It was a fun match. We had great reception all day,” said Chris Knott, CMP armorer who helped lead the Pop-Up event.

An event meant only for fun, the CMP’s Pop-Up Pistol Match drew in over 100 competitors.

Over 100 competitors completed the just-for-fun match, with more showing up to observe out of curiosity. The details of the Pop-Up event are currently being discussed by CMP staff members, with the possibility of reprisals at future CMP events.

Another fresh competition to the CMP calendar was the Revolver Match, which saw over 170 competitors. Winning the inaugural event was Anthony Bellipanni, 50, of Birmingham, Alabama, with a score of 274-8X. High Woman was 2LT Lisa Emmert Traciak, 25, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, while John O’Donnell, 63, of Saint Louis, Missouri, and Vernon Reichenbecher, 73, of Edgar Huntington, West Virginia, earned Senior and Grand Senior titles, respectively.

Also new to the National Matches pistol series was the inclusion of Industry Day. Vendors like Walther Arms and Starrett precision tools arranged their own displays on the range, which included hands-on and live-fire product demonstrations conducted alongside CMP’s Pistol Games matches on surrounding ranges.

Along with the new were the traditional National Trophy Matches and CMP’s own Pistol Games matches that have come to be greatly anticipated by competitors, including the prestigious President’s Pistol Match and the National Trophy Individual (NTI) event.

SSG Ryan Franks was the winner of the prestigious President’s Pistol Match.

Claiming the 2021 President’s Match was SSG Ryan Franks, 33, of the Army Marksmanship Unit with a score of 379-12X. Civilian David Lange, 52, of Glen Rock, New Jersey, went on to overtake the NTI Match, firing a score of 287-10X.

The GLOCK Match, sponsored by the popular pistol manufacturer, again brought a unique and exciting challenge to the range. Winning the Stock category was Jonathan Shue, 40, of Liberty, North Carolina, with an astounding 500-45X. SSG Carl Clegg, 35, of Columbus, Georgia, cleared an incredible 500-46X in the Unlimited category, while SP4 Mate Standard, 32, of Waverly Hall, Georgia, dropped only two points in the Rimfire category to reach an overall score of 498-43X in the GLOCK event.

I understand that competitors in some matches( e.g. team matches)were shooting unclassified. Not a good idea…how can a beginning marksman hope to compete with a high master. You need to break the categories into classifications or..there us no point in competing. I hope my information was wrong.

      Dennis,
Scores fired in team matches will not be recorded for classification. Competitors who do not have a pistol classification (CMP or NRA) must compete in the Master Class for their first competition, or a Match Program may provide for a separate category for unclassified competitors.
