CMP Smallbore Rifle
The CMP Smallbore Program is one of the newest operations in the CMP Competitions division and one of the fastest growing.
Within the last five years, the CMP has created an entire department focused solely on organizing a course of Smallbore competitions for competitors of all ages and experience levels, using smaller caliber rifles than highpower. Competitions range from traditional Smallbore rifle matches (Three-Position, Prone and Team) to newly generated events conducted only by the CMP – carefully cultivated from the ideas of you, the athlete, and placed into fresh challenges on the firing line.
CMP Smallbore Rifle Competition Rules are established by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) to govern CMP Smallbore Rifle competitions conducted during the National Matches or by CMP- affiliated organizations in other CMP sanctioned competitions.
Educational opportunities within the Smallbore Program incorporate hands-on learning and classroom exercises to further develop competition understanding and rifle basics. A Small Arms Firing School designed specifically for Smallbore rifle teaches fundamentals and marksmanship essentials of the discipline through classroom and live-fire practice on the range. Stay close to the CMP for more informative classes and clinics set to pop up around the country in the future.
The main series in the Smallbore competition circuit is the National Matches at Camp Perry, fired each year in July. Smallbore events at the National Matches span nine days and offer both Three-Position and Prone opportunities. Hundreds of adult and junior competitors from around the world have participated in these events, including some of the best Smallbore athletes in the United States today.
Distinguished Smallbore Rifle Badges
Distinguished Badges are the highest individual awards authorized by the U. S. Government for excellence in marksmanship competition. In 2020, the CMP introduced two new Distinguished Badges – the Distinguished Smallbore Rifle Three-Position Badge and the Distinguished Smallbore Rifle Prone Badge. These badges can be earned when a competitor reaches the necessary level of Excellence-In-Competition (EIC) points and achieved through producing outstanding scores in participating matches.
