CMP’s 2022 Junior Three-Position Air Rifle Postal Now Open
October 18, 2022
Civilian Marksmanship Program▸The First Shot▸CMP’s 2022 Junior Three-Position Air Rifle Postal Now OpenRegistration is now open for the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) Three-Position Air Rifle Postal Championship. The annual, national-level competition is designed for junior athletes involved in 4-H, Scouts, American Legion, Club or JROTC sporter and precision air rifle programs.
Firing in the CMP’s Postal Championships not only promotes growth and experience in competition at a national level but also allows the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals on the range.
Participating athletes may choose to fire in the CMP Postal Championship and/or their local CMP State Championship. During the Postal match, competitors receive targets by mail to record shots at their home ranges in each of the three positions: prone, standing and kneeling. Targets are then submitted back to CMP Headquarters for official scoring by staff members. State Championships are conducted by CMP State Directors or specially appointed Match Directors. Athletes are encouraged to compete in both the postal and state matches.
This year’s Postal Competition will run through Feb. 15, 2023. State CMP Championships are open through Feb. 1, 2023.
Top scoring athletes will move on to the Regional Championships in Ohio, Alabama or Utah in April, with the culminating 2023 National Championships set to be held at the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center at Camp Perry, Ohio, June 22-24 (sporter), and July 10-12 (precision).

I worked for USPS for 37 years. Why is this called a Postal shoot? The name gives me a negative connotation of the USPS. Please explain how and why this came about.
Burnell, The first phase of the competition takes place at the competitors home range. CMP mails the official targets to the competitor, they fire their shots on those specific targets and mail them back to CMP for scoring. The 2nd phase of the competition is the Regional Championships, a shoulder-to-shoulder match, were competitors travel to one of three ranges to compete against each other. The final phase, the National Championship, will take place at our Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center and the National Championship awards will be awarded.
