CMP to Host Rimfire Sporter Rifle Event at Talladega Marksmanship Park in June

June 14, 2020

Civilian Marksmanship Program▸The First Shot▸CMP to Host Rimfire Sporter Rifle Event at Talladega Marksmanship Park in June

By Ashley Brugnone, CMP Writer

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is happy to announce the addition of a Rimfire Sporter Rifle Match to the Talladega Marksmanship Park match schedule. The event will be held at the facility on June 27, 2020, and is open to new and experienced competitors.

The Rimfire Match will be fired on CMP’s electronic target system, with personal monitors at each firing point.

During the match, firing is held at 50 and 25 yards on a target with a 1.78″ ten-ring and an 18″ outer one-ring, using .22 rifles. Separate classes of rifles are recognized during the event, including O-Class for open sights, T-Class for telescopes and a TU class for tactical unlimited rifles.

The Rimfire Sporter target is simple enough for a beginner to hit yet challenging enough that only one competitor in the history of the match has ever fired a perfect 600×600 score. The event will be fired upon Talladega Marksmanship Park’s electronic target system, which presents instant shot scores on a monitor placed at each firing point.

The Rimfire Sporter Match includes standing, sitting and prone positions.

To adhere to current guidelines, the CMP will follow social distancing and other sanitary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of participants, staff and guests during the match. Though staff members of Talladega Marksmanship Park will be equipped with face masks, they will not be required for visitors to the facility. However, for the protection of everyone present, masks are highly recommended. Please remember to remain respectful of others as you visit the park.

To register for the Rimfire Sporter event, visit CMP’s Competition Tracker page at https://ct.thecmp.org/app/v1/index.php?do=match&task=edit&match=20247. Cost of participating in the event is $7.50 for youth and $15 for adults. Pre-registration is recommended but may also be done within the Talladega Club House on the day of the event.

For more information or questions, contact Matt Carroll at [email protected].

Three different rifle types are fired in the match: O-Class, T-Class and TU.

About Talladega Marksmanship Park:

The 500-acre Talladega Marksmanship Park is loaded with a 600-yard rifle range, a 100-yard multi-purpose range and a 50-yard pistol range, each equipped with Kongsberg electronic targets and scoring monitors that allow shooters on the firing line to review shots in a matter of seconds.

The intricate electronic targets have the ability to be reused, so there is no pit duty required at Talladega. For even more convenience, competitors unable to transport their equipment through the hilly terrain of Talladega Marksmanship Park will be provided with transportation to and from the ranges. All firing lines are covered, so competitor and guests will stay dry and in the shade throughout the matches.

The park also features shotgun opportunities, like a trap field, 5-stand field and a 15-station sporting clays field – furnished with automated trap machines.

Talladega Marksmanship Park is crowned by 13,000 square feet of the Park Club House overlooking Alabama’s mountain views. Inside the club house is the CMP Pro Shop, where guests are given the opportunity to purchase firearms, ammunition and other shooting supplies, as well as CMP memorabilia. Big TV screens located throughout the Club House display shots fired on the John C. Garand Range (600-yard range) throughout the day.

The park is open to the public year-round, Wednesday through Sunday. View the park website (https://thecmp.org/ranges/talladega-marksmanship-park/) for hours and fees.

About the CMP:

Is the Rimfire Sporter match actually using electronic targets or was that a misprint?
