CMP Issues Classification Cards to Qualifying Competitors
December 21, 2020
Civilian Marksmanship Program▸The First Shot▸CMP Issues Classification Cards to Qualifying CompetitorsThose who have earned designated classification status within Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) competitions will soon have proof of their achievements, with specially designed carrying cards set for distribution.
The cards will display the individual’s name, CMP Competition Number and all classification ranks (Marksman, Sharpshooter, Expert, Master and High Master), as well as the date each classification was reached and average score.

Cards will also be available for download through CMP’s Competition Tracker site. To download, login to the Competition Tracker page (https://ct.thecmp.org) and go to “My Account”. Under the tab titled “Competitions and EIC Results”, you will see your classifications in the lower right side of the screen. In the near future, CMP Classification certificates for display purposes will be accessible as well in the same location.
CMP Classifications are awarded for the following disciplines:
- Highpower Rifle
- Service Pistol
- .22 Rimfire Pistol
- Long Range
- Match Pistol
- Smallbore (Prone and 3P)
The CMP maintains a national database of competitors and scores that are used to establish classifications. Classifications are used as a basis for award groupings during CMP competitions.

Competitors earn classifications through score averages fired in qualifying competitions. As scores improve, so does a competitor’s classification standing. Learn more about each discipline’s classification rules by visiting the “Competition Rulebooks” page on the CMP website at https://thecmp.org/competitions/cmp-competitions-rulebooks/. If you have questions regarding the CMP Classifications, please contact CMP Competitions staff at competitions@thecmp.org.

I would like to know if my current NRA classification is transferable to CMP events or does the CMP classification requires starting all over again. Thank you.
CMP bases our classifications from CMP events. You can find upcoming events at https://ct.thecmp.org/app/v1/index.php?do=matchRegistrationListUpcoming. Are there a minimum number of shots fired required to receive a classification in Service Rifle ?
Rule 3.11.4, CMP Highpower Rifle Classifications are based on the competitors current 10 shot average for a minimum of 50 shots.
Christine

Perfect timing CMP.You are on the ball again as I received the classification card 1-4-21.
Coincidentally that morning I tried to contact NRA Portal to pay the annual $15 classification fee for Silhouette and other events.Well the system is not ready.I then contacted NRA competitions about it.
Reply was they were not ready yet. Contacted them on 1-11-21 and still not ready. They will contact me when it’s ready. Also after a 5 year lapse from NRA HP I am now no longer classified. Now unclassified.
Thank You CMP for being on the ball.No fee,no prompting, and keeping my classification.
Please take over NRA Silhouette.
What about classification for Air Pistol?
I would like to see them offer classification cards for 10m air pistol too. A great way to motivate athletes!
It’s late December and no cards in the mail yet.
The mail is very slow at this time. Some of our competitors have received their cards this past week.
Thanks,
Christine
Tom, I do not know how far back in time you go when determining who has earned certain shooting rewards. Recently I re-engaging in competitive shooting. In 1960 while serving with the US Army as a member of the 101st Airborne I qualified as the 101st High Power RIfle champion, XVIII Champion, and Second in All Army resulting in my attaining the Distinguished Rifleman’s Badge in 1960 at Camp Perry the same year. I did not start shooting again after I left service in late 1960 until 1965 where I became the Florida state Champion in 65, 66, 67 68 then went to CampPerry in 1967 where I was the top scorer on the Elihu Root team. The DRB that I earned in 1960 is probably only the relevant award you deal with but to be sure I just thought a little history was important. I am sure at 82 I am probably among the oldest competitors today. A small note I just joined the International Defense Pistol Club, a totally different skill set.
Received my distinguished with service rifle in 1989, will I be able to obtain a card?
I believe you have to be a current competitor in CMP matches to be issued a classification. You can confirm with our Competitions Department at competitions@thecmp.org for further information.
Thanks,
Christine
Outstanding! The juniors especially will be so happy ???
Am I able to get my classification back – I stopped shooting due to major damage to my shoulder. I have a new shoulder and want to start shooting again – I was hoping to return to my old clasification
Master – High Power
Gary,
The CMP Classification system is fairly new. Rifle started in 2018 but we used 2017-current for the scores. Long Range began in 2018. Service Pistol & .22 Rimfire Pistol began in 2019 and Match Pistol is new for 2020. You will receive a classification once you fire in a match and met the requirement for the number of shots/average score.
Thanks,
Christine
