Submitted by Stephen Hurst, Carmel Gun Club President
Each year, the Carmel Gun Club in Marina, Calif., conducts a John C. Garand Match in commemoration of Company C, 197th Tank Battalion. Company C was stationed in Salinas, Calif., when they (along with the other companies of the 194th Tank Battalion) were deployed to the Philippines during the Fall of 1941 in support of its defense from a possible Japanese attack. They fought in the Philippines in the early days of World War II, were captured on Bataan and spent the remainder of the war in Japanese POW camps.
On Dec. 12, 2015, Carmel Gun Club held its annual match honoring the men of Co. C. This is one of Carmel Gun Club’s most popular matches, bringing participants from all over Northern California and active duty military personnel assigned to the nearby Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif.
This year’s winner was Mr. Jim Piini, with a score of 471-9X over the As-Issued Military Rifle Course A. With his score, Jim was awarded a Gold CMP Achievement Award pin, a plaque and his named placed on the perpetual Co. C, 197th Tank Battalion Match Cup. Well done, Jim!
