CMP CANCELS WESTERN GAMES DUE TO ARIZONA RESTRICTIONS
January 17, 2021
Civilian Marksmanship Program▸The First Shot▸CMP CANCELS WESTERN GAMES DUE TO ARIZONA RESTRICTIONSTHE TALLADEGA SPRING CLASSIC (March 16-21) WILL REPLACE THE WESTERN GAMES THIS YEAR ONLY
“Due to the severely limited number of participants allowed at the Ben Avery facility imposed by the State of Arizona, it is not feasible to hold an event at the facility,” said Judy Legerski, CMP Board Chairman. In addition to allowing no ammunition or rifle sales, Arizona restrictions allows only 10 persons per building regardless of building size, and will allow no more than 50 people on the highpower rifle range (including range officers and staff) despite the outdoor venue.
“We were looking forward to this successful annual event in its March location on the calendar, but these restrictions leave us no choice but to withdraw from the event,” she said. “We had planned a full slate of events in Arizona, including CMP Games rifle, EIC service rifle, multiple pistol matches, vintage sniper rifle, rimfire sporter rifle and a series of rifle and pistol training courses.”
In its place the CMP is hosting a series of rifle and pistol matches at the CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park where we can safely host CMP competitors. The March 16-21 event will include a pistol 2700, a mid-range 3×600 rifle match, long range rifle clinic & pistol Marksmanship 101 course. – all of which are new events which never been done at any of our CMP conducted matches. See details at https://thecmp.org/competitions/talladega-spring-classic/.
“This “Talladega Spring Classic” will provide an opportunity for our competitors to shoot a variety of new matches. We are sorry that we cannot hold the Western Games this year. We look forward to returning to the great Ben Avery Range in Arizona in 2022.” Mrs. Legerski said.

While empathize for those looking forward to the “Western Games,” I am thrilled CMP is hosting “Spring Classic” at TMP, having just completed my first Match week of competitions at “Talladega 600.” I really appreciate the new classes being offered including Pistol and M1 Maintenance clinic. If CMP is going to attract new “participants,” it helps offering other events too. Loved all the helpful staff at TMP, RSO to club house. CMP staff there was great! Looking forward to March.
Hi, Mr. Cooper (I’m guessing Steve Cooper will read this).
Sorry to hear the Western Games are cancelled. I stopped by last year but couldn’t take part, a friend and I were driving a moving truck to Prescott and we only needed to use the restrooms 🙂 But I did say Hi to Steve Cooper.
What’s the deal with “no rifle or ammunition sales” at Ben Avery? The Western Games are cancelled anyway but is this going to be a Thing going forward, if and when the Games return?
Digging around online, I see that for this year, Ben Avery isn’t renting guns anymore either (a charity trap shoot announces that on their web site).
What’s the rationale for this, whose idea is this? (Not CMP’s I’m sure, but then, whose? AZ? The Dept. of Fishy Games? Ben Avery?)
Man. The Suck just gets worse every day.
Regards,
Pete
Peter,
I’ll forward this onto Steve so he can reply back! We hope to see you in Phoenix in 2022!
Thanks,
Christine
According to the website, it is a Game and Fish rule. Probably issued to relieve the Department of any civil liability in the event of misuse of firearms. Lots of commercial ranges have changed their rental policies. When my brother wanted to rent some guns at a range in SLC, they required him to list two personal contacts that they could call to verify that it was safe to rent them to him. They actually called them and spoke with them.
The club range that I belong to in Tucson is having a swap meet this weekend. Accessories and ammunition are for sale/trade but no firearms.
