M1911 Order Processing
February 26, 2025
Civilian Marksmanship Program▸The First Shot▸M1911 Order ProcessingAn Update from CMP CEO, Jerry O’Keefe:
As most of you know, we recently restarted sales in our surplus M1911 operation after an eight-month interruption. With the sales resumption a few weeks ago, we’ve had many, many questions about our M1911 Program. Frankly more emails and phone calls than we can respond to without interfering with our production and sales effort which none of us wants. In an effort to respond globally to all these inquiries and maintain transparency with our supporters and customers, the following are some key points about the current status of the program.
Received Orders:
- Round Four. We have about 1,300 – 1,400 remaining orders to process and fulfill from Round Four. Our CMP M1911 staff is focused on processing orders and shipping pistols – processing about 1,000 pistols a month. You can do the math, but this pace will result in all Round Four orders being fulfilled by about mid-April. In terms of sequencing and work-flow we have our sales associates working these in the prescribed random number sequence but also in batches. Therefore, it is possible that exact random generated number sequence might not occur but this will only be by a day or two. We’ve seen some of you express concerns on the Forum about this but it really is a non-issue.
- New Orders. As you know post-Round Four we are not using “Rounds” or random generated numbers. We will fulfill orders based on the date of application receipt. We expect to start fulfilling new orders received in 2025 in the late April timeframe. All orders will be processed in the order that they were received. Do keep the orders flowing in – more to follow on this below.
Order Status:
- Customers should expect to receive an email with their order confirmation for all new orders. We’ve also just added a new CMP M1911 Order Status web pageto provide a general timeframe and expectation for order fulfillment – and we will update this page each week: https://thecmp.org/cmp_sales/1911-sales-information/1911-order-status/.
This webpage will include a table that shows approximate fulfillment windows based upon the receipt date of your order and our sales velocity/pace. Again, fulfillment windows provided are approximate but will give you a general idea.
- If something is missing from your order packet, our CMP M1911 staff will contact you for that information when we pull your order for processing.
- The lifetime limit remains at two pistols per person. This control is codified in a Memorandum of Agreement between the Department of the Army and the CMP. We will seek relief from this as our goal is to raise it to four, and we will keep you well informed. However, we don’t expect a change (if any) prior to this summer.
- For those of you who are first time M1911 customers you can now purchase two pistols at the same time.
- For those of you looking for something special, we expect to put some of the more rare M1911s or M1/M1911 matching serial number pairs on our auction site later this year. If you are interested in something like this you may want to plan accordingly in terms of the lifetime limit. I acknowledge that many of you are already at the sales limit and as stated earlier we are working on that.
Availability of M1911s/Inventory Status. Surplus M1911s are a historic, rare and finite commodity, however, right now our inventory is reasonably deep. We have an adequate number of pistols to fulfill current and potential future orders I believe through 2026, with many available grades. Of course, that depends on future demand and as you might suspect orders are in fact rolling in fast. That said, the message I’m trying to relay is we have a significant inventory on hand. We also expect to receive another shipment of M1911s from the Army in the coming weeks. For ordering details, please visit https://thecmp.org/sales-and-service/1911-information/.
In closing, I apologize for the delay in responding to your inquiries. I appreciate your support for this program and also your patience as we work to organize and work through the significant number of recent orders. I hope this email and the steps I’ve outlined will help with transparency as we work to fulfill your orders.
If you have any further questions that are general in nature, please respond in the fields provided below so that all of you can benefit from the question and answer. If you have a specific question concerning your order we will do our best to answer via our 1911 Contact Form. We thank you again for your support of the M1911 Program and, in turn, all of CMP’s initiatives to enhance the future of marksmanship.
Is this program for a 1911 still available and if so how does one sign up ? I would be interested .
Shelby,
Please visit our website at https://thecmp.org/cmp_sales/1911-sales-information/ for all the details and order forms.
Thank you,
Christine
At RGN 47492, I am getting close. When can I have my FFL send in his information? Can I do it now or do I need to wait until I have been contacted?
Jimmy,
According to our 1911 Forum, RGN 465XX was contacted yesterday for their payment and FFL information. So we are getting closer!
Thanks,
Christine
Hi – I was contacted mid February about buying a 1911 and paid over the phone with a credit card. Is it possible to cancel my order and receive a refund? Thank you, Brian
Brian,
I’ll forward your comment onto our 1911 Manager, Dan, and he will be in touch.
Thanks,
Christine
Hi, I was wondering if there was a way that I could verify my RGN for round four. I received it back before the delay in orders and I think I know it but am not sure. Thank you for any help.
Bret,
I found your Round 4 RGN and will email it to you.
Thanks,
Christine
Thank you very much, I appreciate it and know you all are very busy.
Bret
I do not remember what my number is.. do you still have me on the list? I do remember being near the end. Thank you!
John,
I sent you an email with your Round 4 information.
Thanks,
Christine
When ordering a surplus M1911, can we request particular dates of manufacture, such as WWII vintage, for at least some of the parts? Thanks.
Hi!
I have a question about the club/group affiliation to qualify to purchase one of the 1911s. I saw that law enforcement related affiliation would qualify. Do you consideration being a FOP (Fraternal Order of Police) Member a qualifying membership?
Thank you!
Shawn,
Yes, the FOP is a special affiliate and would qualify for the club membership requirement.
Thanks,
Christine
My first Camp Perry Pistol I checked out a NM 45 auto to shoot the Pres. & Leg match. Do you have such a pistol(s) in the cmp buy program?
Carl,
We don’t offer pistols for competitors to use during the National Matches. The Small Arms Firing School offers ammunition, a pistol and instruction (classroom and on the firing line). You can learn more at https://thecmp.org/training-tech/small-arms-firing-schools/.
Thanks,
Christine
I sent my round 4 form in got a RGN 10/10/23, am I still on the list to receive a 1911?
Alan,
Yes you are still on the list for Round 4 and we expect our 1911 staff to contact Round 4 customers by the end of March. If you follow our Forum, https://forums.thecmp.org/forum/cmp-sales/cmp-1911, you will be able to see what RGNs are receiving their shipments (yesterday, RGN 45690 received his shipment). Getting close!
Thanks,
Christine
Glad to see the updates. I received my RNG right before the extension was put in place after the hurricane. Just curious if I’m still on the list. I would also like to Thank everyone at the CMP for all you do to promote firearms safety to the young Americans who are interested in the sport.
David,
Yes, you are still listed for Round 4 and our CMP 1911 staff should reach out to you in the upcoming few weeks.
Thanks,
Christine
What has happened to previously submitted forms for the previous submissions prior to the halt of sales last year?
I submitted a package and have my RGN.
Tim,
Yes, you are still listed for Round 4 and our CMP 1911 staff should reach out to you in the upcoming few weeks.
Thanks,
Christine
I am a member of the North Carolina troopers association. Would this qualify me to order a cmp 1911a1
Mr Silver,
Yes, professional 501(c)3 law enforcement organizations and associations such as the FOP, NAPO, NSA, etc. are considered a special affiliate and would fulfill our club membership requirement. You will still need to provide proof of citizenship, marksmanship and a copy of your drivers license. See our requirements at https://thecmp.org/cmp_sales/eligibility-requirements-2/.
Thank you,
Christine
CMP received my order packet on 1/31/25. I sent it UPS overnight. I didn’t get a email notification until 2/13/25.
Brian,
Correct, our first email order confirmation was sent out on 2/13 for all the orders received. The date listed that your packet was received on 1/31/25.
Thanks,
Christine
hello.
I sent in my packet first week of the month and have not received and email back on whether or not my packet arrived.
is there a way to check if my packet was received.
many thanks
Romero,
It appears your email address was entered incorrectly. I will have our 1911 staff update your email address. Your order was received on 2/10/25.
Thanks,
Christine
I just sent in my application for a 1911. I haven’t done this since about 1982 when I applied for my M-1 rifle from the DCM! Fingers crossed it will happen before my birthday!
Thanks for the update. I know you all are working very hard, and the CMP has always provided something very special to us all. Given how finite and rare surplus 1911A1s like this are, I do wish there were a way to prioritize first-time orders over repeats. Speaking personally, I’ve been working and saving for a long time to be able to have a shot at one of these and I would hate for the best, nicest ones to get gobbled up before other folks who maybe just now are entering the sport have a chance to have one. This is especially the case if you raise the limit to four pistols. The CMP emphasizes connecting youth to the shooting sports, after all, so it would be nice for some of the new folks to have a chance. Just my two cents for your consideration.
Benjamin — thank you for your comment. We are balancing a number of variables here to include current inventory, projected new inventory from the Army, our sales velocity, budget forecasts and goals for the company . . . But the bottom line is we have a deep inventory now with more pistols due in from the Army in the March/April timeframe. The Army’s already approved this next tranche and we are just working through the timing and logistics issues. Bottom line to address your question — everyone has a chance right now and that’s not projected to change anytime soon.
Thank you, sir. I appreciate you taking time to address my question and provide additional detail. That’s great to know the inventory is good! Thank you to you and your staff.
I submitted paperwork at the end of round 4 but have not heard anything back on my packet. If I didn’t get a random number does that mean my packet got lost? Any help would be much appreciated
Phillip,
I’ve sent you an email.
Thanks,
Christine
I sent the 1911A1 order packet by certified mail on 1-29-25, says it was delivered “to a person “on 2-5-25. I never received the return postal card or email from you confirming receipt of my order,
Thanks,
Frank Alan Lovell
Frank,
Order was received on 2/5 – we had your email listed incorrectly. Our 1911 Manager will make that correction in our master sheet.
Thanks,
Christine
Any word from your legal team as to if you will ship to a C&R? IMO, this shouldn’t be an issue because a C&R FFL is an FFL, after all…
Shawn – no update but we are working this. I’d like to get to yes on this but have to run it through all the legal traps. More to follow once we have an answer
Thanks Gerald. I just submitted my application (Post Round 4) last week. Hopefully there’s an answer soon.
I look forward to the lifetime limit of 2 1911a1 pistols to 4 pistols hopefully. Thank you CMP for all that you do.
Can we buy 1911s at a CMP store or do they have to be shipped to an FFL in our state?
Sorry, we do not offer 1911’s at the CMP Store. We ship FFL to FFL.
Hi Brian. We do not currently offer surplus 1911’s in our stores and all must transfer to an FFL in the qualifying purchaser’s state of residence.
Hi Folks —
I may be among your oldest in age (88) and as aconsumer as I bought 2 M1903A3s and 1 M1 Garand from the DCM in the fall of 1958 (I think). Since then I was in the 1st or 2nd tier for the M1911s a couple years ago. I still have my beautiful old Remington M1903A3. As I recall back in those days the waiting period was in the neighborthood of 6 months. In the olden days, the DCM staff were always available and easy to speak with. Many thanks for your service with CMP. Served with pride 1st Cav, 3rd ID, 7th ID, 8th Army, II Corps, XVIII Abn Corps as well as one or two I may have missed in 32.5 years.

Well things have changed since then I called over 50 times to the Anniston store and the Talladega store and NEVER was called picked up by live person,,that is really a big departure from customer service to save the least!! I actually drove from Texas to Alabama to buy a service grade HR garand!!!No luck at either store,,,many rebarreled garands wiith new stocks for 1150.00 ,,Not a single HR service grade,,,Seems like CMP has gone rebarreling crazy just to make more money!!! OH well things change
Hello CMP,
On November 27, 2023 I was assigned my Round 4 RGN number.
Is my name and order still on your list ?
Thanks for all you do, much appreciated!
Thank you
David,
Yes, I see you on our list for Round 4 and you should receive a call/email from our 1911 staff in the next few weeks.
Thanks,
Christine
Thanks so much for your reply and the great work of the CMP.
Hello,
I saw the following comment on your site,
“For those of you who are first time M1911 customers you can now purchase two 1911s at the same time.”
If I purchase two does that require me submitting a second packet or additional paperwork?
Thanks much
I am located in California and would like to also purchase a M1 Garand while waiting for my 1911 but do not want to have an issue with the 1 purchase per 30 day rule. Am I exempt from this rule if I have a ffl03 and COE
If you live in calif, the 1 gun per 30 days limit has been revoked.
Hi John,
Fellow Californian and FFL03/COE holder here. The 1 in 30 rule was struck down in March last year, so as far as I’m aware, no California rule should impede your purchases, if the dates should happen to be less than 30 days apart.
Hi John,
The 1-in-30 limitation was halted and is not in effect…pick up all the guns (you can legally acquire) all at once! No FFL03 + COE needed.
https://crpa.org/news/blogs/big-win-injunction-back-in-place-on-1-in-30-law/
Also, just to further clarify, under that 1-in-30 rule (which is NOT in effect) you could still PURCHASE multiple firearms all at once, but they had to be DROS’d at least 30 days apart.
The one-in-30 law has been enjoined by the court. You can buy as many as you want now.
Thanks everyone for the response. I am aware of the change in California law but the CMP purchasing requirements page states the 1 in 30 rule for CA is why I am inquiring.
We appreciate the update and the business ya’ll are doing! I do have a question in regards to WWI era M1911’s. Are there still some in your inventories?
Yes, we do have some M1911’s in our inventory. These for the most part will be offered as auction items.
Thank you for your inquiry.
Thank you for the update. Very helpful. Maybe I am missing something, When reading all the material the 1911’s are sometimes referred to as 1911’s and sometimes referred to as 1911A1’s. Am I correct in assuming that all the handguns are 1911A1’s or are there 1911’s available as well?
Thank you
Yes, we do have some M1911’s in our inventory. These for the most part will be offered as auction items.
Thank you for your inquiry.
Thanks for the update!
If you’ve previously purchased a 1911 through the program, do you need to repeat the “packet”, or can you just do a “repeat” order?
Thanks!
I just had my rgn pulled and ordered 2 field grades. I asked that when I received my call. I was told every order/shipment will need a new packet. 2 pistols processed on 2 dates needs 2 packets
I was told I had to submit a whole order packet
Thank You for this nicely composed, well written, considerate, and well thought-out update!
Will I get a phone call if I am picked. I’m a retired USNavy Gunnsmate and look foward to receiving 1911
Charles,
Yes, when your order is ready to process our CMP 1911 staff will reach out via phone and/or email to process your order.
Thanks,
Christine
c’mon gordie, what does that have to do with 1911s? That’s the kind of questions that screw things up down there, they are busy, they always let us know in advance. patience is a virtue!
Hi, is the “New Orders Received” date base on when it arrived at CMP through mail, or is it based on the the date the email was sent notifying that CMP received your paperwork?
Thanks.
We have orders listed by the date they were received. Our staff updates the database on Fridays when we don’t ship pistols and an email is usually sent out the following Monday/Tuesday.
Thanks,
Christine
Hi Christine,
Thank you for responding. Sorry I wanted to better explain my question. I sent my packet and tracking shows it arrived at CMP on 1/29/25. I then received an email confirming CMP received my packet on 2/13/25.
On the “Order Status” page would that mean it goes by date of email notification was sent and I fall under below timeline?
1911 Timeframe Table
New Orders Received 2/11/25 – 2/24/25
Order Processing Date
June
Thank you for all the work you and your staff do.
J,
I see your order was received on 1/29/25, so you’ll be in that timeframe (New Orders Received through 2/4/25 – April).
Thanks,
Christine
Perhaps you can actually post what numbers your processing currently.
Jonathan — we are transitioning away from random generated numbers after round four. As I stated in my note, all round four orders should be fulfilled by about mid-April. Since this is relatively soon we didn’t see the need to break this our further. After round four the table in our order status page provides a general timeframe for order fulfillment which hopefully gives all of you what you need. And we’ll keep that table updated if timeframes shift. Thank you.
Thanks for the update, great to have a person who is on top of situations within CMP. Your accessibility during events means a great deal to me. Keep up the good work.
May I request a 1911 that was issued to the Navy vice the Army when ordering ?
It’s random pick by the armorer, they can’t promise a maker or provenance but a polite conversation at time of order won’t hurt. If you’re dead set on receiving a navy gun you probably need to shift focus to auctions.
Thank you for the information.
The pistols ARE worth waiting for.
I have made several attempts to buy merchandise, a 1911 CMP shirt. The checkout asks for email and pass word. As yet, I am unsuccessful in getting a shirt or even making an account. Attempts to reset my email and password are unsuccessful.
David,
Reach out to our staff member Laura at [email protected] and she will be able to help assist you with your eStore account.
Thanks,
Christine
I wish to Thank all of the staff in the work you are doing.
I do appreciate your efforts.
Rob
Great update, the introduction of an order status update page that is reviewed weekly is very welcomed.
Would be cool to see a similar update added for the Garand mail in orders.
Thanks for being a great organization!
Excellent update. Thank YOU and your excellent team.
Thank you!
Thank you for the update. I am an Army Combat Veteran, Vietnam 1967-68, and I had a 1911 with me 24 hrs. a day for the time that I was there. I had a 1943 US ARMY 1911A1, but I made a poor decision, and I sold it a couple years ago. I will keep these and pass them down to my two young Grandsons when I can’t take them out and enjoy them anymore.
Thank you
Jerry.
The transparency is refreshing, great leadership!
Well organized and easy to understand. I, as well as many others look forward to this kind of conversation between the CMP and 1911 enthusiasts.
Bravo Zulu!
HELLO…UNLESS I MISSED IT, HOW MUCH ARE THE 1911 PISTOLS? THANKS JOE…
Joe,
See our website on the 1911s – https://thecmp.org/sales-and-service/1911-information/.
Thanks,
Christine
Pricing in on the cmp website. It depends on grading…. new orders are at the pricing listed, rd4 orders are at old pricing
No address of those who, assuming I’m not alone in this, have been passed over by 1700+ RGNs and whether they should even expect a call? And yes, I personally have been in contact with some folks at CMP via email, but without any substantive address of my situation. At this point I have pretty much given up frankly.
Garth,
Feel free to send another email to the [email protected] email address. We have a few more staff members added to monitor that email box and hopefully you will receive an answer soon!
Thanks,
Christine
Hey CMP 1911!
My RGN was assigned to me in November of 2023. I look forward to getting my email about the final ordering steps, and I hope it is soon! Question: Is there the option to purchase two 1911s when I am contacted? Thanks! 🙂
Yes. You will have the option to buy 2 1911 pistols when you are contacted.
Yes, you can buy 2 at one time with your rd4 rgn assuming you haven’t purchased previously
Keep up the good work. Your efforts are appreciated.
Thanks Jerry for this update. I’m curious about any update on the reproduction Garands you were going to offer? I thought you mentioned in October that testing was to take place in December…..Thank You!!!
The 1911 CMP is not the same as the CMP Rifle division.
Gordie — we are actively working it and we are close! We hope to be test firing some at the upcoming Spring Classic at the Talladega Marksmanship Park in March. We’ll see though. Not a trivial task to produce this new forged Garand receiver. Gives us new respect for the manufacturers that were able to get this done with massively less technology so many years ago.
We’ll keep you all updated as the program is close to moving into the general production phase and with luck we’ll have these out for sale in the next few months!
I know y’all asked us not to call or Email but I want say Thank You and your 1911 staff for what y’all are doing . It is so nice to get updates from y’all. I know the wait will be well worth it. THANK YOU!
