What is the CMP?
The Civilian Marksmanship Program is headquartered in Port Clinton, Ohio, and holds additional offices in Anniston and Talladega, Alabama. The mission of the CMP is to promote marksmanship through firearms training, safety, competitions and youth programs. Our Vision is to lead the nation in marksmanship excellence providing safe, high quality and innovative programs with a focus on youth.
What is the indoor air gun range?
The indoor air gun ranges at both Competition Centers house 80 firing points at 10 meters each, equipped with electronic targets. Monitors located at each firing point instantly show shot placements for a fun and interactive experience. The air ranges are climate controlled, with heat and air conditioning, and holds plenty of seating for participants and guests.
Where are the ranges located?
The air gun range within the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center is located on the grounds of the Camp Perry National Guard Training Site – just west of Port Clinton, Ohio, off of Route 2. The Judith Legerski CMP Competition Center is located at 1470 Sentinel Dr. in Anniston, Ala.
Each Competition Center is open Monday – Thursday to the public all year long, so feel free to stop by any time!
When is the range open to the public?
The range is open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Camp Perry and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Anniston. The range is also open every Tuesday evening from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Camp Perry and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Anniston!
What else is within the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center?
Other than our indoor air gun range, the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center holds a large common area, a classroom, Laser Shot System, a memorabilia and equipment store, several TVs, a projection screen and displays of authentic Olympic and other items from the career of gold medalist and CMP’s Director of Civilian Marksmanship Emeritus, Gary Anderson. There’s even a piece of the Berlin Wall and a medal awarded to Mr. Anderson by President John F. Kennedy!
Another exciting addition at the Competition Center is two laser simulators! Like a video game, the simulators use modified firearms pointed at a projection screen to simulate different target scenarios. It’s a fun way to get started in marksmanship!
What else is within the Judith Legerski CMP Competition Center?
The Judith Legerski CMP Competition Center holds a large common area, classrooms and the CMP South Store – filled with a variety of firearms for purchase, memorabilia, equipment and more!
What are air guns? Are they heavy?
An air gun looks like other types of firearms but utilizes compressed air or CO2 to propel lead pellets downrange instead of the traditional gunpowder. Air guns are lightweight, with little sound and no kickback – making it the perfect introductory firearm. Air guns are also used by marksmanship athletes around the world and are even featured as collegiate sports and established events at the Olympic Games!
Are air guns safe?
Just like any other firearm, with proper use and care, air guns are completely safe. The CMP is dedicated to safety of all firearms, including air guns, and our staff members and range officers are onsite at all times to ensure the safe handling of air guns on the range or to answer any questions.
Do I need to bring my own equipment to use the air gun range?
Nope! We highly encourage those individuals who have never fired an air gun before to come join us at the range. We offer the use of our sporter air rifles for free with the purchase of entry. The more complex precision air rifles, AiR-15 air rifles and air pistols are also available to rent for an additional $5 fee.
The .177 pellets needed as ammo for the air guns may be purchased from the range, and we also have shooting mats and bench rests available for those needing extra support. Just bring your friends and family – we’ll take care of the rest!
How much does it cost to use the air range?
Adults are $10, while juniors (18 years and younger) are $5. Those 18 years and older must sign a one-time CMP Eligibility Affidavit and Liability Waiver in order to use the range, while those under 18 must have a signed parental consent form.
We also welcome seniors and disabled individuals, also for $5.
What ages can use the air range?
With safety in mind, we ask that participants be at least 8 years old, unless they otherwise display maturity and experience. We use our “Huckleberry Targets” for the younger crowd, which light up and emit dog, elephant, cat and other fun noises when hit. We also welcome “older kids” – including age 100 and beyond!
Can I bring my own air gun and equipment?
Yes! Participants are welcome to bring their own air pellets (flat end match type), jackets, protective eye and ear wear or air guns (no more than 600FPS).
Can I shoot my BB Gun at the air range?
Sorry, BB guns are not permitted in our air gun range. We fire .177 flat tipped pellets on our range.
Are there any leagues or clubs at the range?
Absolutely! Though the range can be used for individual training or friendly competition, we also host a Bench League. The league features 30 Shots for record with the use of a bench rest for stability. It’s a great way to ease into competition.
For juniors at Camp Perry only, the CMP has created a Junior Rifle Club – open to all beginning youth who show an interest in air rifle! The club is led by former Division I NCAA rifle athletes, with no initial cost and equipment provided. Air rifle paves the way for several opportunities, including college scholarships, travel or even a trip to the Olympic games!
Can I rent the range for a family or company outing?
Of course! We often host bridal showers, parties, job fairs, meetings, group building sessions and other events. Guests may rent the entire facility, the air gun range or just the outer common area.

Can I volunteer at the range in any way?
We’re always looking for help! Volunteers within the air range may serve as range officers, customer service, store salesman, etc.
