Civilian Marksmanship Program▸General▸Dear All,
I want to say “thanks” once again to all at the CMP for the extraordinary service I’ve received this year.
At the beginning of the year and before the COVID 19 pandemic, I placed an order for an RM1 special and requested an early serial number receiver if possible. This was my first purchase from the CMP and had no idea what to expect.
I can’t truly explain how excited I was when my rifle arrived and to discover that it was a Springfield receiver with a six digit serial number beginning in 318…
I’m sorry to make this such a long note but I want to give you some background for my excitement: My dad and three of his brothers served in WW2. The youngest, Wilbur, died at Pearl Harbor aboard the USS California. After news of Wilbur’s death, my dad Raymond enlisted in the navy, younger brothers Leonard and Lester enlisted in the army. Leonard was in the air corp and continued to serve until 1953 when he died. Lester was an infantryman who received multiple gun shot wounds at the Battle of the Bulge. When Lester passed away in 2002, he still had bullet fragments in his heart
When shooting or just admiring my RM1 special, I try to imagine the possibility of either my dad or one of my uncles having held or used this rifle. I know it’s highly improbable but it’s still fun to imagine.
So, after all of that, I want to thank you all again for bringing such a highlight to my year. The added effort of searching for such an early serial number and beautiful rifle is appreciated far beyond what I can put into words.
Thank you!
John
