Civilian Marksmanship Program▸The First Shot▸Sign Up for the 2024-2025 JROTC Three-Position Air Rifle Postal ChampionshipBy Ashley Dugan, CMP Staff Writer
Registration is now open for the 2024-2025 JROTC Three-Position Postal competition – hosted by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) and open to precision and sporter athletes.
This national-level event welcomes high school junior cadets in Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Space Force, Coast Guard and Air Force JROTC programs who are interested in competing with other youth athletes from around the country.
Organized and facilitated by the CMP, the JROTC Three-Position event is jointly conducted by the U.S. Army Cadet Command, TECOM (Training & Education Command), the Naval Service Training Command and AFOATS (Air Force Officer Accession and Training Schools).
To compete, participants receive three targets and instructions for recording scores. Individuals then fire in three positions (kneeling, prone and standing) at their home ranges – using one target for each position. Once record shots are fired, athletes return targets to CMP for scoring through the mail or use of the Orion Visual Image Scoring system.
JROTC units with approved Electronic Scoring Targets are also authorized to shoot the postal competition on their targets and must follow the JROTC postal electronic target procedures.

We received our targets from CMP this week. Are we allowed to use the Orion Scanner to see how it scores the targets before returning the targets via mail?
Siimoa,
I’ll forward your question onto our JROTC Postal Manager, Brad Donoho and he can answer.
Thanks,
Christine
How many cadets make up one team for the JROTC CMP Postal competition?
There’s 4 cadets per team for the JROTC CMP Postal Competition.
Thanks,
Christine
My daughter is not in JROTC but wants to compete. Can she? She is a senior in high school.
Jenn,
Our CMP Postal Match will open Oct 15 and is open to all juniors – https://thecmp.org/youth/three-position-national-postal-competition/. The JROTC Postal is only for JROTC cadets. Another option is the CMP Aces Postal – that is also open to all juniors. You can find details at https://thecmp.org/youth/aces-postal/.
Thanks,
Christine
She will not be able to compete in the JROTC postal, service, or national championships. If she is a member of a non-JROTC shooting club or team which qualifies, she can compete in other CMP 3PAR events such as the CMP 3PAR National Championships held in June. There are also numerous virtual shooting opportunities if the club is equipped for it.
