CMP Announces Important Schedule Changes to 2023 Camp Perry National Matches
January 13, 2023
Civilian Marksmanship Program▸The First Shot▸CMP Announces Important Schedule Changes to 2023 Camp Perry National MatchesThose already planning to attend the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) 2023 National Matches should take note of considerable changes to the event calendar.
The annual National Matches has been a staple at Camp Perry, Ohio, since 1907. Over the years, the schedule of events has evolved to fit contemporary needs, with the addition of several competitive, educational and other enlightening experiences. The new 2023 lineup has been modified to the benefit of both competitors and guests, with overlapping disciplines allowing further competitive opportunities while on Camp Perry’s celebrated grounds.
The most significant changes to the 2023 schedule involve the National Rimfire Sporter and Smallbore events, which will now be held at the beginning of the National Matches.
“Traditions are strong here at Camp Perry,” said Brad Donoho, CMP smallbore manager. “For as long as I can remember, the Smallbore National Matches have always been between Pistol and Highpower weeks. But as the CMP continues to grow and expand on its competitions in air rifle, we feel this move gives more athletes, especially our juniors, the chance to compete at historic Camp Perry.”
With the schedule changes, those competing in the .22 caliber Rimfire Sporter Match will have the chance to sign up for or simply observe the comparable .22 caliber Smallbore matches. Likewise, the National Smallbore lineup will run parallel to the CMP’s National Air Gun Championships – introduced in 2022 – for those junior athletes looking for experience in those disciplines.
The National Pistol Matches will continue its start after the Fourth of July before moving into the CMP Highpower National Championship, National Trophy Rifle Matches and the National CMP Games events. As in past years, the National Matches will conclude with the Long Range rifle competitions.
With this updated arrangement, the CMP hopes competitors will be able to participate in even more enjoyable and challenging events during the National Matches season.
Summary of the 2023 National Matches Schedule:
- Rimfire Sporter Rifle: July 7-8
- Smallbore Rifle: July 7-16
- Pistol: July 10-16
- National Air Gun Championships: July 13-16
- CMP NM Jr. Rifle Clinic: July 17-21

Hi Christine,
Any word when the Commercial Row Vendor schedule will be posted?
Thanks,
Tom
Tom, We usually post it in late June. I’ll reach out to the Camp Perry Clubhouse to see if they have a draft copy that we can post.
Thanks,
Christine
Christine : did I miss the commercial row dates and times schedule ?
Rick,
It is listed on our website at https://thecmp.org/cmp-national-matches/commercial-row-information/.
Thanks,
Christine
Where can I find out when the activity at the Camp Perry range closes the Exclusion Zone(s) in Lake Erie? And why was the Ohio Naval Militia so understaffed that they allowed dozens of fishing boats to remain within the Exclusion Zones for hours yesterday morning?
Jeff,
I’ll forward your inquiry to our Competitions Manager and she will reply back to you via email.
Thanks,
Christine
How do we sign up?

My Wife got me a CMP gift certificate for Christmas, Can I use it to pay my match fees at the National Match?
Mark, Yes, you can! You will have to coordinate with our competitions department and they can be reached at competitions@thecmp.org.
Thanks,
Christine
I think this is great! I always wanted to shoot small bore at Perry while i was there for the pistol matches. I actually purchased Anschutz 1710 dkl to shoot the sporter matches. Appreciate the forward thinking …
Agree, 2022 was my 25th consecutive trip to Perry, this may be my last for now, I shoot pistol, and air pistol, could not get close to the air gun range, some one needs to pull their head out when it comes to scheduling.
While reviewing the draft National Trophy and Games schedule I see the squadding for the July 29 afternoon relays starts before the morning relays are completed. Will provisions be made to allow those of us who plan to shoot both AM and PM relays to squad for both that morning?
I’ll forward your question to our Competitions staff and they will reply back via email.
Thanks,
Christine
So, you’re holding Pistol, Smallbore Rifle, AND Air Rifle in the same week? With all those people there at once, aren’t you concerned that the lack of available housing in the area (and resulting price increases) will discourage first-timers and less-dedicated returnees?
Holding Pistol and Air Rifle at the same time last year already felt kinda dumb, because it meant the air gun range was effectively inaccessible to the pistol shooters. Maybe doing Pistol and Air Pistol at the same time would make more sense, but this schedule just seems ill-conceived.
I agree, Dave. I am most concerned about a crunch in the availability of huts on base, with the overlap in pistol and smallbore matches.
Completely agree. Having the matches overlap in this way is creating an undue strain and burden in finding lodging. Not to mention the additional crowding at CMP. We enjoy shooting multiple matches and now must choose. I would like to see it return to the previous schedule. Very disappointed that pistol and smallbore are overlapping. We signed up for less this year for that very reason. Not happy with the new schedule at all. Please rethink this for 2024. I definitely liked having smallbore after pistol and not occurring at the same time.
Why no reply from CMP on this question. I have the same question?
Thanks
What about the new rimfire sporter benchrest 100td competition? When does that fall on the calendar?
Neil, I’ve forwarded your question onto our Competitions staff. If you don’t receive a reply, please feel free to contact our Competitions Manager, Shannon, at shand@thecmp.org.
Thank you,
Christine
