I’ll be turning 60 here shortly and it’s been one of my dreams since I was a little kid to own an M1 Garand. Like a lot of things, I always put it off till ‘someday’. Growing up an army brat, both my father and father-in-law were retired Army. Both served in Korea and Vietnam. My father-in-law also served during WWII! I’m sure the rifle would put a smile on their faces.
I forwarded all the all the necessary membership paperwork on the 10th of December. Assuming that it would take 30 to 60 days to receive the rifle, at the earliest, I wasn’t expecting it till mid-January. Well, Christmas eve is my wife’s birthday and we were out all day. When we got home, to my surprise, there was a Fedex, ‘missed delivery’ notice on the door. The mystery package was from Anniston, Alabama! The notice stated they were open till 8:30 that night. The wife said go get it, and at our age, any married man will admit that what the wife says goes. Got there and the Fedex man said the truck was still out but to try again later. Well, I sat in that parking lot for 2 hours watching truck after truck return. Finally went in and sure enough there was my new rifle, it was ‘someday’.
Don’t know about all of you, but as for me, in the day to day grind of work, sometimes we wonder if what we do really has any impact on others. Well, to all the folks at the CMP, it made for a happy Christmas present, can’t thank you enough. I hope all of you had a Merry Christmas and I wish each and every one of you and your families a very healthy, happy and prosperous New Year. I do believe it brought a smile to my father and father-in-law and I know for a fact it got my older brother a little jealous! Can’t ask for more than that.
