Civilian Marksmanship Program▸The First Shot▸CMP Sees Retirements of Longtime Employees in 2024By Ashley Dugan, CMP Writer
In 2024, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) was proud to witness the retirements of two dedicated employees, with over 30 years of combined service to the organization – Lynne Medders and Steve Cooper!
Lynne Medders:
Lynne was our senior accountant who had spent over 18 years at our CMP South office in Alabama. Internally, Lynne was seen as the go-to, reliable associate around the office. If she didn’t have the answer, she’d promptly find it. Through her behind-the-scenes work and talent in the finance field, she was essential in keeping the economic side of the CMP aligned – in turn, supporting the organization’s ability to continue its various programs and initiatives. Accordingly, her efforts have left a lasting legacy that will keep the CMP moving toward future endeavors.
“There are so many pieces that work together to move the CMP mission forward,” said Fabian Lobera, CMP’s Chief Financial Officer. “Lynne quietly and steadily honored the responsibilities of tracking the CMP’s finances for many years and is a significant part of the success story of the organization’s ability to continue its great work.”
“We all enjoyed having her part of Team CMP and wish her the very best,” he added.

Steve Cooper:
Steve was our Education & Training Manager who had spent over 14 years at our CMP North office in Ohio. Through the years, Steve held several significant roles such as editor/writer, marketing manager, general manager and even fellow competitor on the firing line. He was a well-known figure to CMP employees, competitors and spectators alike through his presence on the range and beyond.
“Steve Cooper has been more than just a coworker to all of us at CMP – he’s been family,” said Christie Sewell, CMP’s Chief Programs Officer. “His retirement is bittersweet. Steve brought so much more than hard work and dedication to our team – he brought laughter, warmth and a genuine love for what we do.”
“Whether promoting CMP and the shooting sports, welcoming new individuals with kindness or sharing his passion for the GSMM events and Camp Perry’s history, Steve always gave his heart,” Sewell continued. “He had an incredible way of making everyone feel at home, whether they were a first-time competitor or a longtime colleague.”
“Steve’s love for CMP was evident in everything he did, and his absence will be deeply felt. While we’re sad to see him retire, we are forever grateful for the countless memories, the humor he shared and the impact he made on all of us,” she added. “Steve, you will always be part of the CMP family, and we wish you nothing but happiness in your next chapter.”
Though retired, Steve will stay connected with the CMP through various special projects.

Please help us in congratulating these respected individuals who will always remain members of the CMP family!
Thank you BOTH! Dedication and Service!!!

Congratulations Steve! Retirement isn’t as easy as they say it is but I’m sure you can handle it. I will miss seeing you at the matches with your smile and friendly words. You also made a great shooting partner when I needed one. I wish you a great retirement. Thanks.
I will miss you Steve. I always enjoyed talking with you. I particularly remember at the CMP Western Games in 2020. I arrived just as the CMP decided to stop the matches because of COVID. You eased my disappointment.
Thanks Steve. Enjoy retirement.
Best wishes to all. Steve I’ve known you since I started with the volunteers back in 2017. I have learned alot from your classes and speaking with you individually. You will be missed by us. I wish you the best in your retirement adventures. Be safe and enjoy life.
Many blessings.
Well, now you can race that hot rod Challenger Steve! Always enjoyed your company and cheerfulness. Best to you and yours! Jeff Lovat
Steve, I am saddened by the fact that I won’t get to see you each summer that I come to Camp Perry. We spent much time discussing and sharing the history of Camp Perry and its future. You made each visit of mine to Perry very special. I do want to wish you the best in your future endeavors. Congratulations on your exceptional career with CMP and now your retirement. Have fun, live life, and enjoy whatever your plans are for the next chapter.
We’ll really miss Steve. He always had time to say hello and talk a few minutes with you. I always looked forward to seeing him.
Congratulations on a well-earned retirement. My sons and I always appreciated your knowledge and wisdom. Hope we’ll see more of you on the firing line at Perry and Ethan Allen.
Cheers!
Steve was always helpful and friendly on the firing line. What a great guy to talk to!
Congrats to both retirees.
Thank you!
