CAMP PERRY, Ohio – The 2024 National Three-Position Sporter Air Rifle Championship, hosted by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), was held June 20-22 at the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center in Ohio. A group of nearly 200 juniors from 4-H, Scouts, American Legion, club and JROTC air rifle programs participated in the event.

Athletes in the 3P event compete at three positions: kneeling, prone and standing.

Typically, those competing in the Three-Position National Championship fire two consecutive days of qualifying scores at kneeling, prone and standing positions, followed by an eight-person final for the top competitors. Unfortunately, this year’s event was disrupted by an unexpected power outage within the range on Day 2. The outage lasted so long that CMP staff eventually had to make the difficult decision to discontinue the rest of the match and eliminate the final.

Due to a power outage in Ottawa County, the Sporter Final was cancelled and awards were held in the semi-dark range.

“Due to the outage, we regrettably could not proceed with the three-position elimination final,” said Katie Harrington, CMP Air Gun Manager and Match Director of the event. “Thankfully, since all participants had completed their qualification rounds, only the top eight individuals were affected. We tried to be as fair as possible and awarded the top eight places based on their qualification scores and included additional prize money so that all finalists would leave with something.”

Prize money included $1,000 for first, $750 for second and $500 for third. Places fourth through eighth earned $200 for their performances. Overall winners determined from the existing qualifying scores were:

  2. Jordyn Allen, 17, Rehobeth High School Navy JROTC, Alabama
  3. Ashley Carr, 17, Guns R Us 4-H, Nebraska
  4. Samantha Seagle, 18, Trigger Time Shooting Education 4-H Club, Virginia
  5. Alexis Guerrero, 18, Jack C. Hays High School, Texas
  6. Brooklyn Zeigler, 17, Daniel Boone High School, Tennessee
  7. Celeste Guerrero, 18, Jack C. Hays High School, Texas
  8. Avery Hines, 14, Pickaway Diabolos, Ohio
Award winners for the U15 category were: Alexandra Orr, Lafayette Gun Club (1st-center), Ashlyn Tilley, Carroll County 4-H (2nd-right) and Rebecca Ahrens, Trigger Time Shooting Education 4-H Club (3rd-left).
Award winners for the U17 category were: Lexi Strand, Trigger Time Shooting Education 4-H Club (1st– center), Andreyona Smith, Norview HS VA (2nd– left) and Elizabeth Gunn, American Legion Post 290 Jr Shooters Team 1 (3rd-right ).
CMP awarded the Top four seniors $1,000 Scholarships.
Two-time Gold Olympian and DCM Emeritus, Gary Anderson, was in attendance for the Championship. Gary was the award presenter and posed for photos after the event.

The CMP also presented $1,000 scholarships to the top four placing graduated seniors of the event – Alexis and Celeste Guerrero of Jack C. Hays High School (Texas), Samantha Seagle of Trigger Time Shooting Education 4-H Club (Virginia) and Jordyn Allen of Alabama.

Jack C. Hays High School (Texas) earned the 2024 CMP Sporter Team Champion Title with a score of 4379-140x and was awarded a check for $2,000 from the CMP.

Additionally, the top five teams of the 2024 National Three-Position Air Rifle Championship were awarded:

  1. Jack C. Hays High School 1, Texas (Shiloh Hargrove, Alexis Guerrero, Celeste Guerrero, Brynn Gray) – 4379-140X
  2. Trigger Time Shooting Education 4-H Club, Virginia (Samantha Seagle, Samantha Erick, Lexi Strand, Rebecca Ahrens – 4358-152X
  3. Zion Benton High School Team 2, Illinois (Brayden Rich, Brianna Benedetto, Addyson Gustafson, Gianna Gomez) – 4348-121X
  4. Daniel Boone High School, Tennessee (Brooklyn Zeigler, Connor Rowan, Mackenzie Cole, Zachary Higgins) – 4340-116X
  5. Zion Benton High School Team 1, Illinois (Kalinn White, Miah Leong, Riley Vines, Nathan Zelaya) – 4329-120X

Several junior athletes were awarded their Junior Distinguished Badges during the Sporter Championship awards ceremony. So far, 1,799 Junior Distinguished Badges have been awarded.

The National Three-Position Air Rifle Championship for precision athletes is set to be held back at the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center, July 8-10.
