Many Highpower Rifle ranges that host CMP-sanctioned matches now have electronic targets. Match Sponsors, Range Officers and competitors who are acting as Verifiers during Highpower Rifle events conducted on these ranges should familiarize themselves with the CMP Rules for extra shots since crossfires are one of the most common problems that occur in Highpower Rifle and Vintage Military Rifle events. Highpower Rifle Rule 7.6.4 and CMP Games Rule 10.6.4 provide for dealing with unclaimed or extra shots in slow fire stages. Highpower Rifle Rule 7.6.5 and CMP Games Rule 10.6.5 provide for dealing with extra shots in rapid-fire stages. These rules give step by step procedures for determining whether an unclaimed shot is a crossfire. Most extra shots are crossfire shots, but not all extra shots are crossfire shots. Extra shots may be caused by debris released by a shot on one target striking an adjacent target. Recent experiences with certain electronic targets have shown that shot reports from one firing point can bleed over to an adjacent target and also be indicated as an unclaimed or extra shot there. If an unclaimed or extra shot appears on a target, and there are no missing shots on adjacent targets, the Technical Officer should check shot times for the firing point with the unclaimed shot and shots fired on adjacent targets. If there is a close match between the time the unclaimed shot was recorded and a shot on an adjacent target was fired, that is proof that the competitor on the adjacent target could not have fired an alleged crossfire and that the unclaimed shot is a simultaneous bleed-over from that shot. This simultaneous bleed-over problem has been sufficiently serious that some match sponsors squad competitors on every other firing point, especially for rapid-fire stages.
