The McMullen County 4-H Shooting Sports program in Texas has seen incredible growth in recent years. What started with just five youth participants has now expanded to serve over 20 members across multiple disciplines, including rifle, shotgun, archery and a newly developing pistol program. This expansion reflects a growing interest in shooting sports as well as a strong commitment to developing confident, responsible young leaders.

At the heart of the program is a focus on teaching safe and responsible firearm handling. From their first practice, youth learn the importance of proper safety procedures, range rules and respectful behavior – lessons that go far beyond competition. These skills help participants gain discipline, patience and confidence while learning to set and achieve personal goals.

This year alone, McMullen County youth have attended district and state contests in rifle, shotgun and archery – bringing home top team honors, personal bests and new milestones. Even more impressive than the results is the steady improvement and personal growth seen in each participant.
As interest continues to grow, the county is expanding its practice facilities to better support the increasing number of youth and the addition of new disciplines. The development of a pistol program marks another step forward, offering more opportunities for youth to get involved and grow within the sport.
Backed by dedicated coaches, Extension agents, volunteers and supportive families, McMullen County 4-H Shooting Sports is building much more than skill; it’s building responsibility, leadership and a bright future for every youth involved.
