M1911 Order Processing

February 26, 2025

Civilian Marksmanship Program▸The First Shot▸M1911 Order Processing

An Update from CMP CEO, Jerry O’Keefe:

1911 Ordering Information – Click Here – Accepting Orders!

As most of you know, we recently restarted sales in our surplus M1911 operation after an eight-month interruption. With the sales resumption a few weeks ago, we’ve had many, many questions about our M1911 Program. Frankly more emails and phone calls than we can respond to without interfering with our production and sales effort which none of us wants. In an effort to respond globally to all these inquiries and maintain transparency with our supporters and customers, the following are some key points about the current status of the program.

Received Orders:

ORDER STATUS
  • Round Four. We have about 1,300 – 1,400 remaining orders to process and fulfill from Round Four. Our CMP M1911 staff is focused on processing orders and shipping pistols – processing about 1,000 pistols a month. You can do the math, but this pace will result in all Round Four orders being fulfilled by about mid-April. In terms of sequencing and work-flow we have our sales associates working these in the prescribed random number sequence but also in batches. Therefore, it is possible that exact random generated number sequence might not occur but this will only be by a day or two.  We’ve seen some of you express concerns on the Forum about this but it really is a non-issue.
  • New Orders. As you know post-Round Four we are not using “Rounds” or random generated numbers. We will fulfill orders based on the date of application receipt. We expect to start fulfilling new orders received in 2025 in the late April timeframe. All orders will be processed in the order that they were received.  Do keep the orders flowing in – more to follow on this below.

Order Status:

  • Customers should expect to receive an email with their order confirmation for all new orders. We’ve also just added a new CMP M1911 Order Status web pageto provide a general timeframe and expectation for order fulfillment – and we will update this page each week: https://thecmp.org/cmp_sales/1911-sales-information/1911-order-status/.

This webpage will include a table that shows approximate fulfillment windows based upon the receipt date of your order and our sales velocity/pace. Again, fulfillment windows provided are approximate but will give you a general idea.

  • If something is missing from your order packet, our CMP M1911 staff will contact you for that information when we pull your order for processing.
  • The lifetime limit remains at two pistols per person. This control is codified in a Memorandum of Agreement between the Department of the Army and the CMP. We will seek relief from this as our goal is to raise it to four, and we will keep you well informed. However, we don’t expect a change (if any) prior to this summer.
  • For those of you who are first time M1911 customers you can now purchase two pistols at the same time.
  • For those of you looking for something special, we expect to put some of the more rare M1911s or M1/M1911 matching serial number pairs on our auction site later this year. If you are interested in something like this you may want to plan accordingly in terms of the lifetime limit. I acknowledge that many of you are already at the sales limit and as stated earlier we are working on that.

Availability of M1911s/Inventory Status. Surplus M1911s are a historic, rare and finite commodity, however, right now our inventory is reasonably deep. We have an adequate number of pistols to fulfill current and potential future orders I believe through 2026, with many available grades. Of course, that depends on future demand and as you might suspect orders are in fact rolling in fast. That said, the message I’m trying to relay is we have a significant inventory on hand. We also expect to receive another shipment of M1911s from the Army in the coming weeks. For ordering details, please visit https://thecmp.org/sales-and-service/1911-information/.

In closing, I apologize for the delay in responding to your inquiries. I appreciate your support for this program and also your patience as we work to organize and work through the significant number of recent orders. I hope this email and the steps I’ve outlined will help with transparency as we work to fulfill your orders.

If you have any further questions that are general in nature, please respond in the fields provided below so that all of you can benefit from the question and answer.  If you have a specific question concerning your order we will do our best to answer via our 1911 Contact Form. We thank you again for your support of the M1911 Program and, in turn, all of CMP’s initiatives to enhance the future of marksmanship.

When ordering a surplus M1911, can we request particular dates of manufacture, such as WWII vintage, for at least some of the parts? Thanks.

    Hi!

I have a question about the club/group affiliation to qualify to purchase one of the 1911s. I saw that law enforcement related affiliation would qualify. Do you consideration being a FOP (Fraternal Order of Police) Member a qualifying membership?

    Thank you!

      Shawn,
Yes, the FOP is a special affiliate and would qualify for the club membership requirement.
      Thanks,
      Christine

      Carl,
We don’t offer pistols for competitors to use during the National Matches. The Small Arms Firing School offers ammunition, a pistol and instruction (classroom and on the firing line). You can learn more at https://thecmp.org/training-tech/small-arms-firing-schools/.

Yes you are still on the list for Round 4 and we expect our 1911 staff to contact Round 4 customers by the end of March. If you follow our Forum, https://forums.thecmp.org/forum/cmp-sales/cmp-1911, you will be able to see what RGNs are receiving their shipments (yesterday, RGN 45690 received his shipment). Getting close!

Thanks for the update. I know you all are working very hard, and the CMP has always provided something very special to us all. Given how finite and rare surplus 1911A1s like this are, I do wish there were a way to prioritize first-time orders over repeats. Speaking personally, I’ve been working and saving for a long time to be able to have a shot at one of these and I would hate for the best, nicest ones to get gobbled up before other folks who maybe just now are entering the sport have a chance to have one. This is especially the case if you raise the limit to four pistols. The CMP emphasizes connecting youth to the shooting sports, after all, so it would be nice for some of the new folks to have a chance. Just my two cents for your consideration.

Benjamin — thank you for your comment. We are balancing a number of variables here to include current inventory, projected new inventory from the Army, our sales velocity, budget forecasts and goals for the company . . . But the bottom line is we have a deep inventory now with more pistols due in from the Army in the March/April timeframe. The Army’s already approved this next tranche and we are just working through the timing and logistics issues. Bottom line to address your question — everyone has a chance right now and that’s not projected to change anytime soon.

I may be among your oldest in age (88) and as aconsumer as I bought 2 M1903A3s and 1 M1 Garand from the DCM in the fall of 1958 (I think). Since then I was in the 1st or 2nd tier for the M1911s a couple years ago. I still have my beautiful old Remington M1903A3. As I recall back in those days the waiting period was in the neighborthood of 6 months. In the olden days, the DCM staff were always available and easy to speak with. Many thanks for your service with CMP. Served with pride 1st Cav, 3rd ID, 7th ID, 8th Army, II Corps, XVIII Abn Corps as well as one or two I may have missed in 32.5 years.

      Hi John,

Fellow Californian and FFL03/COE holder here. The 1 in 30 rule was struck down in March last year, so as far as I’m aware, no California rule should impede your purchases, if the dates should happen to be less than 30 days apart.

      Hi John,

The 1-in-30 limitation was halted and is not in effect…pick up all the guns (you can legally acquire) all at once! No FFL03 + COE needed.

      https://crpa.org/news/blogs/big-win-injunction-back-in-place-on-1-in-30-law/

Also, just to further clarify, under that 1-in-30 rule (which is NOT in effect) you could still PURCHASE multiple firearms all at once, but they had to be DROS’d at least 30 days apart.

Jonathan — we are transitioning away from random generated numbers after round four. As I stated in my note, all round four orders should be fulfilled by about mid-April. Since this is relatively soon we didn’t see the need to break this our further. After round four the table in our order status page provides a general timeframe for order fulfillment which hopefully gives all of you what you need. And we’ll keep that table updated if timeframes shift. Thank you.

It’s random pick by the armorer, they can’t promise a maker or provenance but a polite conversation at time of order won’t hurt. If you’re dead set on receiving a navy gun you probably need to shift focus to auctions.

Thanks Jerry for this update. I’m curious about any update on the reproduction Garands you were going to offer? I thought you mentioned in October that testing was to take place in December…..Thank You!!!

The 1911 CMP is not the same as the CMP Rifle division.

Gordie — we are actively working it and we are close! We hope to be test firing some at the upcoming Spring Classic at the Talladega Marksmanship Park in March. We’ll see though. Not a trivial task to produce this new forged Garand receiver. Gives us new respect for the manufacturers that were able to get this done with massively less technology so many years ago.

We’ll keep you all updated as the program is close to moving into the general production phase and with luck we’ll have these out for sale in the next few months!
