Civilian Marksmanship Program▸The First Shot▸Electronic Targets Set to Make Debut at CMP’s 2024 National Mid/Long Range Matches!By Ashley Dugan, CMP Staff Writer
CAMP PERRY, Ohio – The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is excited to announce that, for the first time, ALL National Mid/Long Range events will be fired on outdoor electronic targets!
The National Mid/Long Range matches are part of the annual National Matches at Camp Perry, near Port Clinton, Ohio, and are set to be held Aug. 5-10. The Long Range series features 10 individual and team events on Camp Perry’s 1,000-yard Viale Range as well as a Mid-Range Match, fired at 600 yards.
Since the CMP will now be using the electronic targets, the start time of the Mid-Range match on Monday, Aug. 5, will move from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. to allow time for the targets to be set up for the day.
Only 50 targets will be assembled, meaning the Mid-Range Match will likely sell out – competitors are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible!
After field testing the electronic target line for Long Range matches at two spring events, with great success, CMP staff members made the decision to utilize the technology at this year’s National event.
“Using the targets for Long Range at our Eastern Games in North Carolina in May and again at Camp Perry for a test match in June really encouraged us to make them available for competitors at the National Matches,” said Sara Rozanski, CMP’s Highpower Rifle Coordinator. “We received a lot of positive feedback, and we hope bringing the technology to Camp Perry will only enhance the experience of the National Matches for those who attend our Long Range events.”
The electronic targets include monitors at each firing point that instantly display accurate shot scores, creating a more leisurely experience for individuals on the firing line. The use of the targets also eliminates the need for pit duty – drastically cutting down the duration of each match.
CMP’s National Long Range matches include Match Rifle, Service Rifle, Palma, F-Open, F T/R or AR Tactical categories. The events are open to adult and junior competitors, regardless of experience level.

Question.
Why are you not using Shot Marker a far superior system?
Thanks
Michael,
I’ll forward your comment to our Management Team to answer.
Thank you,
Christine
Will the electronic targets be used during SAFS and the EIC Match ?
John,
Not this year but we will hopefully expand the matches utilizing electronic targets next year.
Thanks,
Christine
Michael, the shot marker system is a fine system and works well in many applications. The biggest issue with that system is that it is an external microphone system and is prone to interference from shots on adjacent targets. The system that we use is an “Internal Microphone” system and when running over 100 targets on a single firing line, the KTS system does a better job filtering out that interference.
How many relays will you run?
Jeff, Sara, our Highpower Coordinator, believes it will be 3 or 4 relays.
Thanks,
Christine
When are they going to do the electronic targets for the as issued Springfield/vintage/m1 grand matches so those matches can eliminate the time consuming pit duties?
Michael, We are hoping to have all electronic targets in 2025 (fingers crossed!).
Christine
Christine,
Will this include the P100, NTI and NTIT in 2025?
Jim,
We are hoping to utilize our electronic targets more in 2025! Not sure at this time which matches but we will make additional announcements once plans are finalized.
Thanks,
Christine
Thank you for this decision.
I shot the 2 day LR match in June, the only problem we had was that the targets were to low for the iron sight matches.
I was on target # 125
Steve, Thanks for your feedback – I’ll pass that along to Sara, our Highpower Coordinator.
