Civilian Marksmanship Program▸The First Shot▸CMP Announces Advanced Maintenance Class Schedule for 2025By Ashley Dugan, CMP Staff Writer
The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is excited to release upcoming dates for the 2025 Advanced Maintenance Class!
The Advanced Maintenance Class (AMC) is a three-day course in Anniston, Ala., for those who wish to take their passion for the timeless M1 Garand rifle to the next level. Set within CMP’s Custom Shop, the AMC offers participants the chance to receive unparalleled, one-on-one training from experienced CMP armorers on head space, barrel installation, component function, maintenance and more – all absorbed as students construct personal rifles from CMP’s arsenal of authentic M1 Garand parts!
Additionally, students will receive a guided visit to the CMP South Store and Talladega Marksmanship Park to view the grounds and to fire their newly crafted rifles from the course.
“The instructors and instruction exceeded my expectations,” said Mark Deddens of Missouri. “There was a great mix of competitive shooters, Garand collectors, experienced M1 owners and new gun enthusiasts. Everyone learned something new and were appreciative of the breadth of knowledge contained in this invaluable class.”
“I cannot say enough great things about this course,” Andrew McCormack of Minnesota went on. “The instructors obviously love what they do and did whatever was asked by the students to ensure that they left with all questions answered and a new set of skills and information.”
“I had an absolute blast!” added Robert Mudzinski of New York. “The knowledge of all instructors was impressive. I feel confident in taking apart and repairing and cleaning any other M1 Garand I own.”
Due to popularity of the classes, registration for the AMC will be based on a random drawing system. Registration for the drawing will be open Nov. 1 to Dec. 31. Registering for multiple classes is permitted, but no applicant will be selected for more than one slot. Former AMC participants are welcome to sign up for 2025.
The 2025 dates include:
- March 4-9, 2025
- April 8-13, 2025
- May 13-18, 2025
- June 17-22, 2025
- August 19-24, 2025
- Sept. 9-14, 2025
- Oct. 7-12, 2025
NOTE: The first three days of each AMC week are for individuals taking the course, while the last three are “buddy” course days – reserved for applicants wishing to attend with a designated partner of their choosing.
Those interested in the AMC may find more information or enter into the random drawing through the CMP website at https://thecmp.org/training-tech/advanced-maintenance-class/. Any questions regarding the 2025 AMC or for online registration questions may be directed to Hector Lopez-Perez at hlopez.perez@thecmp.org or call (256) 835-8455, ext. 513. We hope you’ll join us for this unique opportunity!
Do you get to buy the assembled Garands at the end?
What is the cost of the course please?
Mark,
Yes, the total cost for the AMC is $2,350.00 ($1,200 – Tuition cost – Included is a case, Kuhnhausen book, sling, etc. and $1,150 – Expert Rifle). You will build your very own M1 Garand in the class!
Christine
Will participants be able to assemble .308 Expert rifles in this class or will only 30-06 be available?
Tom,
If you are selected for an AMC, you can discuss options with our Custom Shop team at that time.
Thank you,
Christine
I signed my wife up as my buddy she and i travel together but I don’t think she wants to build a rifle was this the right thing to do
Hi David,
You may sign up for the Individual Course and bring her with you if you are selected. The first two days are held in a classroom, and no guests are allowed during that time. However, on the final day, participants will be going to the Talladega Marksmanship Park to test fire their rifles and guests are allowed to attend then.
So awesome – I put in for 2024, but didn’t get selected- hope my luck changes in 2025
Hi Steven,
With over a thousand people hoping for a seat, we knew there would be many people who had to hope for next year’s opportunity. Fingers crossed that you could get selected this year!
Will there be a beginner’s course for either M-1 Carbine and/or Garand this coming year?
If so, what are the requirements to register for the course(s)?
Hi Burton,
The Advanced Maintenance Course is a beginner’s, intermediate, and advanced course all in one! No matter what experience level you possess, this course will provide you with the well-rounded knowledge of the M1 Garand.
We do not offer any other firearm courses.
Very much interested in attending the Oct 7-12 2025 class… alternate I could manage the March 4-9 2025 class
Hi Joseph,
You should register for both course dates. We only have 280 seats available, and each month will have its own random drawing. Good luck!
